A Quebec Facebook page that critics say is a bastion of anti-Muslim propaganda was removed Thursday from the popular social media website.

The Pas d’Islam radical et de charia au Québec (PEDIGA) page had some 18,000 followers and — in a post on its wall last November — one of its members produced a list of Quebec mosques with the stated goal of “vanquishing them.”

In the wake of last month’s deadly mosque shooting in Quebec City, the page’s administrator wrote that the time had come to shut down the Facebook group.

“I can not live knowing that I may have involuntarily contributed to radicalizing someone,” wrote the administrator. “Never will I forgive myself for having directly or indirectly contributed to the death of one or many human beings.”

Alexandre Bissonnette — the suspect accused of murdering six men dead and wounding 19 — frequented a number of right wing, anti-immigrant and white nationalist online forums. The mosque attack has raised questions about the role of social media in giving a platform for hate speech and extremism.


“(This is) a beautiful victory against Islamophobia in Quebec,” a statement on the Salam Alaikom Facebook page read.

Salam Alaikom is a page run by Montreal Muslims dedicated to fighting Islamophobia online. For months, it had campaigned to have the PEDIGA page taken down.

Many of the page’s users, however, cautioned that a number of anti-Muslim Facebook groups are still active in the province. Those include Contre l’islamisation au Québec and the Quebec chapter of Européens patriotes contre l’islamisation de l’Occident.
