Just three weeks prior to the vicious beating which landed Christy Mack in the hospital, she was spotted at an MMA event with her alleged abuser and ex-boyfriend, War Machine.

While Christy Mack, 23, has stated that she and War Machine, 32, broke up in May, it seems like their break may not have been all that clean. The two were photographed holding hands at an MMA event on July 25, just three weeks before he showed up to her house on August 8 and allegedly beat her so severely that she ended up in the hospital, facing $100,000 in facial reconstruction surgery.
Despite them having broken up in May, sources have revealed to TMZ that the two “still consistently hooked up from time to time.”
The photo of them holding hands was taken on July 25 in Temecula, CA, at an MMA fight. The fact that they were together at an event may explain why War Machine would have been jealous when he arrived, unannounced, at Christy Mack’s home on August 8 when he saw her with Corey Thomas.
However, War Machine’s jealousy over some potential mixed signals certainly doesn’t excuse his alleged attack on Corey, giving him a “broken nose and two black eyes,” according to TMZ, nor allegedly beating Christy so severely that she believed she was going to die.
War Machine: ‘Real Men Rape’
Whether or not Christy and War Machine consistently hooked up after their breakup shouldn’t cloud the issue of the awful beating that she sustained, allegedly by his hands.

In her Twitter statement, Christy has alleged that War Machine was abusive prior to their official break in May. Ending a relationship with an abuser is not as easy as saying “no”; there are a number of reasons why women remain in abusive relationships.

According to the Domestic Abuse Project, which has compiled a list of reasons why women stay, there are women who have been told by their partner that they will be hunted down and killed should they leave. Keep that in mind before even considering to condemn Christy for appearing at an event with her alleged abuser.

War Machine is a known misogynist, having claimed on Twitter in August 2013 that he raped Christy because she wanted him to wait until “after errands,” and then went on to rant that it’s not rape if it’s your wife or girlfriend and that “real men rape.” He later claimed that his remarks were just a bad joke, for which he apologized, but the words seemed to have been fed to him by a PR team.
