This is the man who shocked staff at a mortuary when his dead body showed possible signs of life.



An investigation has been launched after paramedics were called to a hospital morgue where they tried to resuscitate Julian Bell, who had been confirmed dead earlier that day.

The victim had drowned after falling 100ft from Kessock Bridge in Inverness.

Attempts to revive him failed and he was taken to the Raigmore Hospital mortuary by an undertaker.

An ambulance spokesman said: “Following retrieval, and having been in the water for some time, the ambulance crew made every effort to resuscitate the patient.

"However, despite active resuscitation being carried out with no response, a clinical assessment was undertaken, including ongoing cardiac monitoring, and confirmed that the patient had died.”

But upon his arrival at the mortuary, staff quickly raised concerns that the man could potentially still be alive.

The incident on Friday is being investigated by NHS Highland and the Scottish Ambulance Service said it was also be reviewing the case.

An NHS Highland spokeswoman said: “In the course of routine checks on the deceased, hospital staff were concerned that there were potential signs of life.

"The Scottish Ambulance Service and an internal cardiac arrest team attended and resuscitation immediately commenced.”

Despite their best efforts, the man was pronounced dead for a second time.

The spokeswoman added: “The death is subject to an investigation by the procurator fiscal.

"We are also holding our own internal significant event review, as is normal *practice in these circumstances.”

Last month a hospital worker was suspended after a body was discovered in an NHS mortuary van when it was taken to a garage for repairs.

A porter took the vehicle to get a rear light fixed but was unaware that a body was still in the back.

NHS Grampian apologised to the family of the dead person and to the garage.
