PA Man Missing for 9 Days Found Dead in Snow

Sunday, February 23, 2014

Associated Press

EPHRATA, PA (AP) - February 23, 2014 (WPVI) -- A 77 year old Pennsylvania man who had been missing for nine days was found dead by a search and rescue team.

The Reading Eagle reports that the body of Richard T. Jordan, who had late stage Alzheimer's, was found Saturday morning in his neighbor's yard, just outside Ephrata. That's about 50 miles east of Harrisburg.

Deputy Coroner, Terry Straka, says Jordan died of hypothermia. Jordan, who was living with relatives, left his home unexpectedly at 6 a.m. on February 13 in his pajamas during a snowstorm.

Authorities say they would have found Jordan much sooner if not for recent severe storms.

That's Alzheimer's for you. Terrible disease. I've worked with a few patients with severe, late stage Alzheimer's and there was just nothing left of who they used to be

That is so sad. My Grandma was in a long term assisted living facility for her Alzheimers. At some point, she wandered out of the building, and fell over, getting stuck in a pile of snow. It took them a while to locate her, she survived, but holy crap, what a disaster that was/could have been.

im sorry to hear that! Here in arizona, not quite sure about others states but its illegal to lock the residents in at an "assisted" living! Despite the fact majority of asst living residents are beginning to advanced alzheimers its a "fire" hazard... well... Ive worked in those kinds of places and the flight risks are higher than the fire hazard aspect by far, plus some dont employ enough staff to safely care for the level of care these individuals need!!

That explains a lot!! My Uncle and Aunt were in charge of things with my Grandma, as they were in the same state as her. I just remember them raising hell over it.

Should have had his ass handcuffed to a chair if his alzheimers was that bad. He would still be alive.
