Re: NSA Pretended to Be Facebook to Infect Millions of Computers

I don't claim to know everything, but I studied hacking and internet security for several years. So I know more than the average person on the subject of internet security. The SINGLE BEST way to avoid at least 90% of the problems is to use a Mac.
I'm an apple fanboy, but for damn good reasons. The lack of viruses and trojans being one of them.

Keeping a windows computer even semi secure is impossible. You could spend 80 hours a week concentrating on securing a windows computer and still miss more shit than you catch.

To try to secure a windows computer is FAR harder and less likely to succeed than if they had passed out duct tape to the passengers of the Titanic and asked them to start taping the hole together. As stupid and awkward as that sounds, it's nothing compared to trying to stop the leaks on a PC.

The single most common way they gain control is through applets and java through your web browser. If you are cursed with a life on a windows computer, the single best piece of advice I can give is to use firefox when searching the net and use an add-on called "Noscript".

Then use it to block ALL sites from running java and scripts. I would say only allow trusted sites, but considering what Snowden released info on, NO SITE can be trusted. He even mentioned sites like cnn.com as a site that the NSA likes to use against people. I'm not sure if he elaborated anymore on that subject though.

And for those of you who say fuck apple, I prefer windows, the NSA will back you up on your choice completely, lol. So just KEEP THAT IN MIND!

Re: NSA Pretended to Be Facebook to Infect Millions of Computers

Is any of that real? How does the government stalk you if you don't have a webcam or mic?
By intercepting EVERYTHING else you do. Honestly, the camera thing is way overrated. That's more of a threat to your privacy and to make you feel uneasy more than anything. Plus you probably don't want someone watching you play with yourself in front of the computer while surfing internet porn.

The only way the NSA could and would use the camera against you is if they are targeting you personally. As far as the mic, same thing. However, despite all of that, I have a piece of tape over my camera and would suggest anyone else with an IQ over 10 do the same.

Re: NSA Pretended to Be Facebook to Infect Millions of Computers

NSA Denies Everything About Latest Intercept Leak, Including Denying Something That Was Never Claimed

Tim Cushing of Tech Dirt wrote this interesting (and quite funny) article.

The recent leaks published at Glenn Greenwald's new home, The Intercept, detailed the NSA's spread of malware around the world, with a stated goal of sabotaging "millions" of computers. As was noted then, the NSA hadn't issued a comment. The GCHQ, named as a co-conspirator, had already commented, delivering the usual spiel about legality, oversight and directives -- a word salad that has pretty much replaced "no comment" in the intelligence world.

The NSA has now issued a formal statement on the leaks, denying everything -- including something that wasn't even alleged. In what has become the new "no comment" on the NSA side, the words "appropriate," "lawful" and "legitimate" are trotted out, along with the now de rigueur accusations that everything printed (including, apparently, its own internal documents) is false.
Code:
Recent media reports that allege NSA has infected
millions of computers around the world with malware,
and that NSA is impersonating U.S. social media or other
websites, are inaccurate.
NSA uses its technical capabilities only to support
lawful and appropriate foreign intelligence operations,
all of which must be carried out in strict accordance
with its authorities.
Technical capability must be understood within the legal,
policy, and operational context within which the
capability must be employed.

NSA's authorities require that its foreign intelligence
operations support valid national security requirements,
protect the legitimate privacy interests of all persons,
and be as tailored as feasible.
NSA does not use its technical capabilities to
impersonate U.S. company websites.
Nor does NSA target any user of global Internet services
without appropriate legal authority.
Reports of indiscriminate computer exploitation
operations are simply false.
First off, for the NSA to claim that loading up "millions" of computers with malware is somehow targeted (and not "indiscriminate") is laughable. As for its "national security directive," it made a mockery of that when it proudly announced in its documents that "we hunt sys admins." Targeting telco and ISP systems administrators goes well outside the bounds of "national security." These people aren't suspected terrorists. They're just people inconveniently placed between the NSA and its goal of "collecting it all."

Last, but not least, the NSA plays semantic games to deny an accusation that was never made, calling to mind Clapper's denial of a conveniently horrendous translation of a French article on its spying efforts there.
Code:
NSA does not use its technical capabilities to
impersonate U.S. company websites.
This "denial" refers to this portion of The Intercept's article.
In some cases the NSA has masqueraded as a fake Facebook server, using the social media site as a launching pad to infect a target’s computer and exfiltrate files from a hard drive...

In one man-on-the-side technique, codenamed QUANTUMHAND, the agency disguises itself as a fake Facebook server. When a target attempts to log in to the social media site, the NSA transmits malicious data packets that trick the target’s computer into thinking they are being sent from the real Facebook. By concealing its malware within what looks like an ordinary Facebook page, the NSA is able to hack into the targeted computer and covertly siphon out data from its hard drive.
The NSA's own documents say that QUANTUMHAND "exploits the computer of a target that uses Facebook." The man-on-the-side attack impersonates a server, not the site itself. The NSA denies impersonating sites, but that's not what The Intercept said or what its own documents state. This animated explanation (scroll down for the video), using the NSA's Powerpoint presentation, shows what the attack does -- it tips the TURBINE servers, which then send the malware payload before the Facebook servers can respond. To the end user, it looks as though Facebook is just running slowly.

When the NSA says it doesn't impersonate sites, it truly doesn't. It injects malware by beating Facebook server response time. It doesn't serve up faux Facebook pages; it simply grabs the files and data from compromised computers. The exploit is almost wholly divorced from Facebook itself. The social media site is an opportunity for malware deployment, and the NSA doesn't need to impersonate a site to achieve its aims. This is the NSA maintaining deniability in the face of damning allegations -- claiming something was said that actually wasn't and resorting to (ultimately futile) attempts to portray journalists as somehow less trustworthy than the agency.

Re: NSA Pretended to Be Facebook to Infect Millions of Computers

Yes and I know that this thread is about Facebook, but everyone needs to remember that the NSA uses thousands of different sites and methods. So if someone wants to keep their computer secure, Facebook is just a small portion of the overall picture.

what are the odds that they could get their hooks in DR? Not sayin they would but sites like this I would think would be target due to the nature of it and of course the history behind it? my thoughts....... but trust no one, question everything.....

Hardly surprising, average Facebook user is usually concentrating on getting as pissed as possible on camera rather than web security.

Re: NSA Pretended to Be Facebook to Infect Millions of Computers

I ditched Facebook long ago and closed out my account. Since then I have rebuilt my computer with new hard drives. Problem solved.

Not a fan of social media for a lot of reasons, privacy being one of the top ones.

Many fail to realize that they are unwittingly giving up one of their greatest gifts. Private thought. The governments ultimate wet dream.

Your best bet would be to use Linux as its as far from a (Although closer than ever before depending on the distro) mainstream OS as they come.

Millions upon millions of viruses are created for Windows because 95 % of the world uses the software. The question programmers ask is "Why spend the large amount of time necessary to create an exploit for Linux if no one uses the software"

Creating exploits for Linux would be the same as a terrorist bombing a building with only five people inside.

Not only are potential victims scarce in the Linux community, many programmers are not familiar with Linux enough to write successful exploits even if they wanted to.

You should give Linux a test drive. Run a dual boot with Windows and whenever you have some time, tinker with it because Linux is far more user friendly than in the past, although there are still hoops one must jump through to get everything the way you want. With Linux, you're in the driver seat.

The Apple corporation is full of a bunch of communistic cock sucking ******* who want to force users into using their sorry software, which is why I steer clear.

The creators of Windows and Linux are the equivalent of Capitalism; they believe a user should have a choice of which software and hardware they feel brings about most comfort and/or enjoyment.
