The disappearance of 13 year-old schoolboy Daniel Morcombe from a bus stop in December 2003 became Australia's biggest missing person's case after his parents launched a massive nationwide campaign to find him.

In the meantime, rumours of his fate abounded. At one point, it was even rumoured that Morcombe's disappearance was connected to a pedophile ring and that he had been dubbed "Christmas Cake".

He was missing for almost 8 years before Perth convicted pedophile Brett Peter Cowan was finally charged with his abduction and murder.

Brett Peter Cowan has been found guilty of the murder of Queensland teenager Daniel Morcombe.

Cowan, also known as Shaddo N-Unyah Hunter, was also found guilty of indecent treatment of a child and interfering with a corpse.

Cowan was emotionless in the dock after the unanimous guilty verdict.

The verdict brings to a close what has been more than a decade of anguish for the Morcombe family.

Daniel's twin Bradley and his mother Denise reportedly broke down in tears after hearing the verdict.

The decision comes after a 19-day trial in which 116 witnesses gave evidence.

Supporters outside the court gave three cheers to the police after the verdict was reached.

The jury began deliberations after midday yesterday, and after going home at the end of the day, continued to discuss the case until lunchtime.

It is believed that Justice Roslyn Atkinson will hand down her sentence in about an hour.

Cowan will likely face life in jail for the heinous crime.
The Morcombe family will read out victim's impact statements during the sentencing.

Bruce and Denise Morcombe have released a statement to media, but have not yet spoken publicly.

"Thanks largely to the covert police involved and SES searchers plus scientific experts, a child killer has been exposed," the statement read.

"On behalf of our entire family, we thank everyone who has contributed to finding the answers and especially for never forgetting Daniel."

Daniel was abducted and murdered on the Sunshine Coast in 2003, but his remains were not discovered until 2011.

Queensland Police created a false criminal gang composed of undercover police officers in order to induce Cowan to confess in 2011.

The court saw hidden video in which Cowan confessed to the murder of Daniel to a man he believed to be a crime boss, but who was actually a police officer.

He then led the group to an isolated sandmine where he had dumped the boy's body.

Police assistant commissioner Mike Condon, who was heavily involved with the case, thanked the Morcombes while speaking to the press outside court.

"I'd like to thank the Morcombe family for their patience and their ongoing belief in the investigation," he said.

"I'm sure they will be happy with the verdict today, although their journey is not over."

Assistant commissioner Condon also thanked the prosecution for their hard work, as well as the media and the community at large.
The jury did not hear about any of Cowan's previous crimes, including multiple attacks on young boys.

Cowan had twice been jailed for the abduction and rape of other young children, and had admitted to abusing dozens more.

He had taken a seven-year-old boy from a playgroup and molested him in a toilet block, before putting his hands around the boy's throat.

A Darwin six-year-old suffered life-threatening injuries after he was raped by Cowan.

Cowan also abused up to 30 children when he himself was a child in the change rooms of a local swimming pool.

He also committed violent sex acts and role plays on adult sexual partners, including choking one woman into unconsciousness.
Because of his sexual history police spoke to Cowan just two weeks after Morcombe's disappearance, but it was more than eight years before he was arrested.

I didn't know the developments and this bastard had been caught before this thread, saw the Crime Investigation Australia episode hosted by Steve Lebman several times, very sad story.
