Tyler Gamble, a spokesman for the New Orleans Police Department, says Officer Daryle Holloway was shot Saturday morning and pronounced dead at an area hospital about a half-hour later.

Police Chief Michael Harrison told reporters that the suspect, 33-year-old Travis Boys, was able to get his hands out of handcuffs, grab a firearm and shoot Holloway while he was driving. Harrison says Boys came from the back seat into the front seat through a hole in the cage.

Gamble says police and other law enforcement, including state troopers, St. Tammany Parish sheriff's deputies are searching for Boys, who was initially arrested on an aggravated assault charge.

Re: New Orleans Police Officer Killed While Transporting Suspect

A 22-year New Orleans Police Department veteran who was transporting a suspect in a police vehicle Saturday morning (June 20) was shot in the head and killed by the suspect who somehow managed to take the officer's gun, Superintendent Michael Harrison said. The police vehicle crashed into a utility pole near the intersection of Elysian Fields and North Claiborne avenues and the suspect fled the scene on foot, triggering a manhunt.

Officer Daryle Holloway, 46, died shortly after 9 a.m. after being rushed to a hospital. Holloway, who was assigned to the 5th Distrtict, was transporting a suspect that had been arrested during a previous shift on an aggravate assault charge. Harrison identified the suspect as Travis Boys, 33.

"This is an extremely sad day for the police department and a sad day for the city of New Orleans," said Harrison, a personal friend of Holloway for 22 years.

Harrison said the suspect was handcuffed with his hands behind his back in the back seat of the police cruiser but somehow managed to get his hands from behind his back. He then made his way through a port opening in the caging that separates the front and back seats of the police vehicle and got Holloway's gun.

The police officer put up a fight, but was shot in thet head by the suspect, when then fled the scene. Law enforcement agencies from thoughout the area are involved in the search for Boys.

"He will pay for what he did," Harrison said.

Power lines are down in the area where the police vehicle crashed, a scene that drew dozens of officers shortly after the incident. Harrison said the incident has shaken the department.

Harrison said telling the officer's family was the hardest thing he's had to do as police chief.

Good, good, the black man has taken the blame. Everything is going as planned. No one suspects a thing, Mike, so just play it cool...

/walks away whilst whistling innocently

Taking into consideration that it is NOPD- good chance he was busy texting, talking on the phone, leaned out the window hallahing at a hoochie momma chicken neck.

I am sure there is more "neglectful" parts of the story conveniently being left out.

It's been happening a lot lately, and not just in the city. There was a dude running around up in the woods between Amite and Kentwood not too long ago after he escaped from a prison van using an iron bar that had been left in the van against regulations. The transporting officer didn't thoroughly check the vehicle beforehand.

It might not be entirely the cop's fault, though. I once and in very short order got my cuffed hands in front of me in the back seat of an NOPD car with even the front bench seat supposedly pushed "all the way back" against my legs, but only got that far because the officer was exiting off the interstate at the time. It didn't take me long to do it, and it didn't take him long to notice it and jump my shit (I was just trying to get comfortable, officer, really, I swear), but I had enough time to do something nefarious had I been so equipped and inclined.

I seen a guy getting arrested in niggahtown (don't ban me it IS a part of town ), the cop had him cuffed but like just left him standing in the middle of the road, while he roamed off to talk to people. The little skinny fucker within two secs flopped to the ground, had the cuffs in front, ran over jumped into the cop's cruiser flying off in it.

He didn't get far though, he ended up trying to cross the median, got stuck on the tracks on St charles.
