Re: NEW ORLEANS NYE VEHICLE ATTACK
New Orleans Rampage Suspect Acted Alone, Supported ISIS 03.01.2025 - A former US Army soldier who plowed his truck into crowds celebrating the New Year has pledged allegiance to ISIS, but acted alone in the attack that killed at least 14 people, the FBI said on Thursday (Jan 2). The suspect, who was shot dead at the scene after opening fire on police, has been identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old Texan who served in Afghanistan. He drove from Houston to New Orleans on Dec 31 and uploaded five videos to Facebook between 1.29am and 3.02am on the morning of the attack in which he said he supported ISIS, the militant group with members in Iraq and Syria, the FBI said. The FBI also revealed that an ISIS flag was also found on the vehicle used in the New Orleans attack. In the first video, Jabbar explained that he had previously planned to harm his family and friends, but was concerned that media coverage would not focus on “the war between Muslims and non-Muslims,” FBI Deputy Assistant Director Christopher Raia said during a news conference. Jabbar also said in the video that he had joined ISIS before last summer, Mr. Raia said. “This was an act of terrorism,” Mr. Raia said. “It was premeditated and a malicious act.” New Orleans officials said the Sugar Bowl college football game, which had been scheduled for Wednesday as part of the New Year’s Eve tradition, would be held on Thursday evening. The city will also host the Super Bowl next month. The FBI said there was no connection between the New Orleans attack and the Las Vegas bombing on the same day in which a Tesla Cybertruck loaded with gasoline cans and fireworks exploded outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas, weeks before Mr. Donald Trump returned to the White House on Jan. 20. The victims in the New Orleans attack included two police officers who were wounded by gunfire from a suspect, who opened fire just three hours before New Year's on Bourbon Street in the historic French Quarter. At least 15 people were killed, including the suspect, the FBI said. The victims included the mother of a 4-year-old who had just moved into a new apartment after a promotion at work, a New York financial worker and star athlete returning to New Orleans for the holidays, and an 18-year-old from Mississippi who aspired to be a nurse. Witnesses described a horrific scene. "There were people everywhere," Kimberly Strickland of Mobile, Alabama, said in an interview with the media. "You just heard screaming and loud bangs and then people screaming and shrapnel - just metal - the sound of metal and bodies falling." Meanwhile, authorities in other American cities said they had increased security, including at Trump Tower and Times Square in New York City, adding that there was no immediate threat. In Washington, police also said they have increased their presence as the capital prepares to host three major events this month: the congressional confirmation on Jan. 6 of Donald Trump's victory in the US presidential election, the state funeral for former President Jimmy Carter on Jan. 9 and Mr. Trump's inauguration as the new US president on Jan. 20.
