Re: NEW ORLEANS NYE VEHICLE ATTACK
Suspect in New Orleans car-ramming attack identified as 42-year-old Shamsud Din Jabbar Law enforcement has evacuated several areas, including St. Roch, where a fire broke out at an Airbnb believed to have been rented by the suspect. Published 5 hours ago on January 1, 2025 By Channel2 NOW Staff In the early hours of January 1, 2024, a horrific attack unfolded in New Orleans’ French Quarter, leaving 10 dead and over 30 injured. Authorities have labeled the incident a terrorist attack, as investigators uncover disturbing details about the suspect and his actions. Local media outlets have just announced that the suspect in the New Orleans attack has been identified as 42-year-old Shamsud Din Jabbar, who was reportedly in possession of an ISIS flag. Local media outlets have just announced that the suspect in the New Orleans attack has been identified as 42-year-old Shamsud Din Jabbar, who was reportedly in possession of an ISIS flag. Jabbar was driving a Ford pickup truck that appears to have been rented. The FBI is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding how he obtained the vehicle. An ISIS flag was discovered inside the truck. Authorities are actively investigating any potential affiliations or associations Jabbar may have had with terrorist organizations. The suspect’s vehicle contained weapons and what is believed to be an improvised explosive device (IED). Other potential IEDs were discovered in the French Quarter, prompting an extensive investigation by bomb squad teams and law enforcement officials. At approximately 3:17 a.m., a truck driven by the suspect barreled through a three-block stretch of Bourbon Street, striking numerous pedestrians and firing indiscriminately into the crowd. After crashing the vehicle, the suspect exited, armed with an assault rifle, and opened fire on responding officers. Law enforcement recovers handgun and AR-style rifle after driver killed. Law enforcement officers returned fire, fatally wounding the suspect, who was later found to be wearing body armor and was not a local. Two New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) officers were injured during the exchange of gunfire and are currently in stable condition. Improvised explosive devices (IEDs) found in and around Bourbon Street were deemed viable, prompting an extensive search for additional devices across the French Quarter. Law enforcement has evacuated several areas, including St. Roch, where a fire broke out at an Airbnb believed to have been rented by the suspect. The property, located at 1329 Mandeville Street, was examined by bomb squad detectives after the flames were extinguished. At least 4 suspicious packages were detonated. Federal authorities have taken over the investigation, working to determine whether the suspect entered the U.S. recently and exploring potential connections to ISIS. The truck used in the attack was reportedly rented through the car-sharing platform Turo. Local residents have raised questions about security measures in the French Quarter. Jimmy Cothran, a 15-year resident of New Orleans, noted that the city’s usual steel mechanical barricades were not in place prior to the attack. “They had the flimsy orange ones that you could just push over with your finger,” he told CNN. The attack resulted in 10 fatalities at the scene, including the suspect. At least 35 others sustained injuries and were transported to local hospitals. Among the injured are two Israeli nationals. The victims’ conditions have not been updated, and authorities are urging families to use the city’s 311 service for information rather than calling 911. The FBI has assumed control of the investigation and is coordinating with local and federal agencies. A media briefing is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. CST to provide further updates. The public is urged to avoid the area from Canal to Dumaine Streets and from Royal to Dauphine Streets until further notice. This tragic attack has left New Orleans reeling as the investigation continues into the suspect’s motives, background, and potential connections to broader terrorist networks. |
