Muslim mother stabbed daughter 40 times and cut out her liver in ritual killing to 'exorcise evil spirits'

A Muslim woman disemboweled her daughter as a sacrifice to God after she became convinced the four-year-old was possessed by spirits, the Old Bailey heard.

Shayma Ali, 36, stabbed the girl up to 40 times and took out her liver while Koranic verses played in the background.

When police arrived at their east London home, Ali was heard chanting: 'I seek refuge in God from the curse of Satan'

Duncan Atkinson, prosecuting, said Ali had become an increasingly devout follower of Islam after a trip to Egypt in 2009.

By last year she was prone to 'outbursts of aggression' towards members of her family who became concerned that her mental health was deteriorating.

'She became particularly pre-occupied by the idea of possession by a thing call a Jinn,' said Mr Atkinson.

'She removed the eyes from toys and videos, covering over the eyes on covers of DVDs and books,' he said.

Ali later told a psychiatrist she had been praying when she began to think about sacrificing a child 'as proof of her love of God'.

Mr Atkinson said: 'She became convinced God wanted her to sacrifice her own child.

Some religious sects engage in beliefs or practices that go far beyond the norm, and are dangerous to the health or well-being of their own members.

Of course murder is the extreme, but it's nodifferent to me than the fundie Christian's child who gets sick and has congregation members pray--no hospital or medical care whatsoever, resulting in the child's death.

Bob Marley died of cancer because of his religious beliefs. If he had had his toe amputated (where the melanoma was initially found) maybe things would have been different for him.

I guess that ^ wasn't germane to the original post. This is: Reminds me of the Christian mother in St. Paul, can't think of her name who killed her kids because she didn't want them to go to hell and she thought they would all be united in heaven. and again I say: religion

It's kind of the egg/chicken question though. Are these people crazy before they become "religious", or does religion make them nuts i.e. is it the crazy element in the disastrous equation?

those people are NUTS...it is absurd to blame religion as a whole. There are people that have mental issues and kill their children who are NOT religious too.

I'm not blaming religion, I just was saying that there are people who use it as a reason for killing their kids. They're using it as a convenient excuse it seems to me.
