Yes, the background checks and mental illness checks are what is currently being pushed... but there is also the potential ban on assault rifles. Many people believe these are just the start of an eventual total ban on firearms, such as the case with many other parts of the world.

Personally, I try not to preach too much about my personal beliefs because it's a lot of time and energy in doing so and for what? It won't change anything and it's very hard to have an intelligent, rational debate about this subject with most people. Just as it is with religion and politics overall.

The divide that's grown over the last several decades I place direct blame partially on ALL 24 hour news networks. In my mind, that's not news. It's all opinion... talk shows disguised as "news".

Fox News, CNN, MSNBC are absolutely brain washing millions of people. I have experienced this directly with someone that lives in my home. Fox News is all he ever watches and it really makes his views and beliefs one sided, ill informed, and based solely off a bunch of judgmental idiots. He's almost obsessed with his views as being the "right" views. The same is true of CNN and MSNBC.

People need to remember that we are ALL human first... before we are white, black, dem, republican, male, female, american, irish, canadian, british, muslim, catholic, intelligent, stupid, ugly, pretty... you get the idea.

But when I say that in most settings (I'm sure it will happen here as well) I get accused of being some kind of hippie. lol But in general, I loathe the human race... but am perfectly capable of looking into the human side of every person I meet or hear about... rather then which god they believe in or the color of their skin.

Agree with every point there. Especially the thoughts regarding divide, as you say, very difficult to avoid the "you believe A and I stand for B so therefore we cannot discuss anything" ... as you say, we're all humans first. We did not start out with the opinions we now hold. We all need to look very carefully at who put them there and what good they do.

A councillor said to me once "Tom, you can choose whatever you want to believe. But just ask yourself 'how is this belief useful to me, how does it benefit my life' and if it doesn't, ask yourself why you believe it."
