Modena, IT: Car Plows into Pedestrians in City Center, 8 Injured (4 Critically)
Modena, May 16, 2026 — A afternoon of terror struck the historic center of Modena. Shortly after 4:30 PM, on Via Emilia (in the area of Largo Porta Bologna / Largo Garibaldi), a car traveling at high speed mounted the sidewalk and plowed through pedestrians who were casually shopping and strolling among stores and tourists. The vehicle, reportedly a Citroën C3, ended its rampage by crashing into the storefront of a clothing shop. Emergency services rushed to the scene with numerous ambulances and even medical helicopters from Bologna and Pavullo. There were no fatalities, but the toll is serious: 8 injured, with 4 in critical condition. Among them is a woman who suffered devastating leg injuries (in one report, both legs were amputated or at risk). source: apnews.com The Driver and the Chase The driver, Salim El Koudri, 31, an Italian citizen of Moroccan origin (born in Bergamo and raised in the Modena province), got out of the car injured and attempted to flee. During the escape, he allegedly pulled a knife and stabbed a brave passerby who tried to stop him. He was nevertheless subdued by several citizens and then arrested by police. He is currently being questioned. source: lastampa.it According to initial reports, El Koudri has no criminal record, holds a degree in Economics (he dropped out of a master’s program), and is unemployed. No links to terrorism or drug use have emerged so far; authorities mention a history of psychiatric treatment. Officials urge caution against speculation while investigations continue. source: apnews.com |

Re: Modena, IT: Car Plows into Pedestrians in City Center, 8 Injured (4 Critically)
That woman required an emergency bilateral leg amputation after being pinned against the shop window. Investigators revealed that El Koudri was treated for schizoid disorders at a local mental health center in 2022. However, local health services lost track of his treatment following the initial observation period. Initial findings point to a combination of severe psychiatric instability and personal resentment over feeling bullied or harassed. Toxicology swabs confirmed that he was completely sober and not under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the attack. Investigators analyzed El Koudri's confiscated digital devices (smartphone and computer) during the search. ANSA news agency confirmed that no jihadist materials, extremist propaganda, or communication with subversive groups were found. No blueprints, maps of the shopping district, or written manifestos were recovered from the home. A review of his social media accounts showed an entirely ordinary profile consisting of simple selfies and benign captions. His Instagram biography featured a melancholy quote: "I wish I could understand the grammar of people the way I understand the letters of the Arabic language," which investigators are viewing as a sign of his deep social isolation. Detectives are questioning his family members regarding his day-to-day behavior leading up to the attack to determine why his severe schizoid disorder treatment lapsed after 2022. |

Initial findings are that he had mental health problems and felt bullied and harassed. And he had problems with Italian grammar which led to extreme social isolation. Seriously, give me a fucking break |
