Following the catastrophic flash flood that tore through Bright Angel Canyon and the Phantom Ranch area on Saturday, federal and local authorities have launched a massive search and rescue operation, implemented sweeping park closures and confirmed at least one fatality.

Eyewitnesses reported a 15-foot wall of water crashing through the inner canyon. The surge destroyed nearly all footbridges spanning Bright Angel Creek, cutting off all hiker access across the water. Park rangers and visitors witnessed structures, bunkhouses, coolers, and even heavy machinery washed down into the Colorado River.

The National Park Service confirmed that the body of a 46-year-old man was recovered on Sunday evening near Crystal Rapids along the Colorado River. As of today approximately 15 individuals remain unaccounted for, down from initial estimates of more than 20.

Emergency rescue teams, including the NPS and the Arizona Department of Public Safety, have successfully airlifted and evacuated 62 uninjured people. Evacuees are being transported to the Maswik Lodge Cafeteria on the South Rim, where the Red Cross is coordinating relief efforts.

A woman stuck in the Grand Canyon during a violent storm Saturday shared video of the harrowing ordeal. Wieke De Boer tried to hold down her tent with her foot to keep it from blowing away as the ground beneath her filled up with water.

The flood severely compromised the park's primary water pipeline. As a result, critical water conservation measures take effect today, which include a ban on all overnight hotel stays within the park.
