To be capable of looking an injured and terrified young girl in the eyes and then to shoot her dead, is beyond my comprehension, regardless of the circumstances. If he had shot to injure and the teens had survived, albeit shaken, then perhaps it would have marked a turning point in their lives and a chance to reflect upon what they did. As it stands, no one will ever know. The dead don't get any second chances. |

To say the least. But it's also relieving, in a way. I heard a little 10-second news blurb about Smith's conviction on the radio yesterday (or maybe the day before -- whichever  ) and I thought to myself, "Great. Another miscarriage of justice." Then I read the details, and -- most importantly -- listened to the home audio, and that opinion turned a complete 180.Brady and Kifer shouldn't have been in his house in the first place, so the lesson there is that those who play stupid games win stupid prizes. But Smith went beyond any reasonable standard with his excessive application of lethal force beyond the point at which any threat had been eliminated, and the audio that followed that of the shootings leaves no doubt that he acted in a willfully malicious manner. Self-defense is one thing, but this guy was clearly full of narcissistic rage and self-righteous bloodlust. The majority of his response to the break-in was completely unnecessary, and the fact that he considered himself to be completely in the right is further proof of his unstable mental condition at the time. His actions were not prompted by fear or situational stress or even temporary insanity; rather, they were the culmination of deep-seated hatred, a self-conditioning philosophy of vigilante justice, a narcissistic ideation of his own moral superiority, and an almost sociopathic dehumanization of his victims. In other words, this guy was a complete fucking loon not in the NGRI sense, but rather as a result of his own voluntary moral depravity. His sentence is most definitely deserved. |
