when escobar was killed there was a slot that needed to be filled and many people willing to do whatever was necessary to fill that slot....so we ended up with the cartels warring over territories and supply routes, warring with each other and with law enforcement...

el chapo is just one of those people and while he doesn't hold as much power as escobar did he definitely keeps the power of a region centralised.... if he is imprisoned there will be another power vacuum and the same thing could happen again if Siniloa splinters....

who knows, maybe that is the way to defeat the cartels.....just keep on imprisoning or killing their leaders until there are so many splintered groups that they have no power left and are merely a load of gangs

Zetas splintered from Gulf Cartel(CDG) and CDG has been fragmenting itself last years after that due to internal power struggle. CDG has a pact in some places with Sinaloa Cartel(CDS) to fight Zetas for example.

Chapo getting caught doesn't mean a thing to drug business. His position and routes are already filled, he still has 2 sons in business. Though these narco juniors are so flashy that they never last as long as their fathers (like Zambadas).
