Mexico Judge Clears 'El Chapo' Guzman Extradition to US

A federal judge in Mexico has ruled that drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman can be extradited to the US.

Guzman is wanted there on charges of smuggling vast amounts of drugs into the country.

The Mexican foreign ministry now has 30 days to decide whether or not to approve the extradition.

Guzman's lawyers have already appealed against the judge's ruling. Two days ago the authorities transferred him to a prison near the US border.

But they denied the move to Ciudad Juarez, just across the border from El Paso, Texas, was a precursor to extradition.

The National Security Commission said the transfer was due to work being done to boost security at the Altiplano maximum security prison near Mexico City, where he was being held.

Guzman was the head of the Sinaloa drug cartel.

He was captured in January, six months after escaping through a 1.6km (one-mile) tunnel from his maximum-security prison cell.

Guzman timeline:

February 2014: Recapture after 13 years on the run following "laundry basket" escape from Puente Grande maximum security prison

July 2015: Escape via tunnel from Altiplano prison

2 October 2015: Interviewed by US actor Sean Penn in Durango state jungle hideout and then by phone and video

17 October: Mexican officials announce narrow escape as police try to recapture him in neighbouring Sinaloa state

January 2016: Recaptured in Los Mochis, Sinaloa state

I read this as - The Mexican foreign ministry now has 30 days to receive sufficient bribes to not approve the extradition.

There's so much beans to spill from El Chapo. Mexican government is in fear but there is huge pressure for his extradition.

Or, give Guzman 30 more days to get the escape plan solidified.

I think he knows once he goes into American custody it's all over, I wouldn't be surprised at all if something crazy goes down.

That being said, I seriously doubt he'd escape from an American super max.

Re: Mexico Judge Clears 'El Chapo' Guzman Extradition to US

nothing would surprise me in this age of corruption and greed...

of course another huge concern is what happens after he is imprisoned??

when escobar was killed there was a slot that needed to be filled and many people willing to do whatever was necessary to fill that slot....so we ended up with the cartels warring over territories and supply routes, warring with each other and with law enforcement...

el chapo is just one of those people and while he doesn't hold as much power as escobar did he definitely keeps the power of a region centralised.... if he is imprisoned there will be another power vacuum and the same thing could happen again if Siniloa splinters....

who knows, maybe that is the way to defeat the cartels.....just keep on imprisoning or killing their leaders until there are so many splintered groups that they have no power left and are merely a load of gangs
