Just a guess, but, I'm thinking he had a small penis and thought it was a mushroom and wanted to smoke it.
I'm no expert, but I don't think most of those in the know when it comes to psilocybin see smoking mushrooms as a viable method of transport.

The high from smoking is reportedly far less intense than the standard method of just eating them.
