Jake's is all done online...and I just transfer the money from my checking to his lunch account at the start of each month. I get a reminder when it reaches $10 and can check the balance anytime. So, this is on the parents too.

As for the staff throwing away the food...that is bullshit. Feed the kids, then tell them tomorrow you get no lunch if there is not money in your account.

I think in some cases it's not about forgetting to pay the bill, it's that they truly don't have the money.

I think most kids would actually prefer a packed lunch, but it's more expensive that way. I think it's about 45¢ for the reduced cost lunch. It's $2.25 if you don't get the reduced cost. (It also costs $1.95 every time you add money to the lunch account or you can pay a $10 fee at the beginning of the year.) The only time my daughter eats school lunches is when she doesn't clean out her lunch box and bring it to me, after getting home from school. I know it might sound mean to do that, but I got really tired of opening her lunchbox on Monday morning with Friday's leftovers and garbage still in there.

Its one thing to have a system which cannot keep track of individual payments and have the parents not top it up.

Its a whole other world when you go up to a 10 year old CHILD and take their food and drink, then trash it and smile as you give them fruit and milk.

What purpose does this serve? The school getting back at the parents through their children.

A nice life lesson was taught here ladies n gents, if you want to fuck with someone like a child you can if you're the state.

God, this just brings me back. We had "reduced" lunch. The fucking lunch lady never let me forget it. I had 3 brothers and 2 sisters. My dad was a cop. He worked crazy hours. He had lost a son 2 years prior (otherwise , I'd have 4 brothers).

It was first grade and the lunch lady told me that my mother needed to stop having babies because, collectively, we owed almost $2.00.

I felt too "dirty" to eat. So I didn't. That continued for weeks. Until I passed out.

These people have no idea what they're doing to these children.

And yes, I fucking took my Harvard degree and put it in her face years later. Fuck. That. Noise.

What if the child has a medical condition and needs to eat?

At my niece's school, they give extra food and snacks to kids with certain issues.

It's just not fair to punish the child, especially in front of everyone

So, throwing away the food and taking out of their mouths saves money

Makes no sense!

I keep trying to get Jake to consider taking a packed lunch...but he is hell bent on eating the spicy chicken sandwich at school.

Honestly, for me, it would be less expensive to send a lunch with him daily, but I agree, when he has taken a lunch on field trips, half the food came back in his lunch box. So that is a total waste of money.

If the issue was lack of money to put into the account, I hope those families try for the reduced lunches at least.
It's sad when the kids must suffer.

If I remember correctly..when I was in school if a student owed them money the school would just hold their report card til they were paid.
