A New York primary care doctor redefined the phrase “life after death” after finding that the brain remains active even after one’s heart stops, as detailed in a morbid study in the journal Resuscitation.

This means that the alleged deceased can likely hear the doctors announcing their time of death after they cease resuscitation efforts, the Daily Mail reported.

This macabre revelation was brought to light by Dr. Sam Parnia of the NYU Langone Medical Center in New York. He had spoken to patients who were revived after being declared clinically dead — when their heart stops beating — finding that they were able to recall events transpiring in their room with astounding accuracy.

In the Frankenstein-like study, Parnia shed light on why their postmortem memory is so lucid — because of “normal and near-normal brain activity found up to an hour into resuscitation,” he previously told The Post.

“We were not only able to show the markers of lucid consciousness — we were also able to show that these experiences are unique and universal,” he said. “They’re different from dreams, illusions and delusions.” This didn’t seem to jibe with doctor’s methods of declaring a patient dead when their ticker stopped.

To shed light on this surprising disconnect between heart and mind, Parnia and his team examined brain activity and awareness among 53 patients who survived cardiac arrest at 25 hospitals, mostly in the US and UK.

A staggering 40% of participants reported having memories or conscious thoughts, per the clip.

“In death, they have a perception that they are separate from their body,” Dr. Parnia said, “and then they can move around. But they’re in that [hospital] room and they’re gathering information. They felt that they were fully conscious.”

The clinically dead patients also had spikes of gamma, delta, theta, alpha and beta brain waves associated with thinking and awareness, as determined by an electroencephalogram, a device that records brain activity with electrodes. These were present 35 to 60 minutes after the person’s heart stopped.

From this, Dr. Parnia concluded that the brain is surprisingly durable.

“Although doctors have long thought that the brain suffers permanent damage about 10 minutes after the heart stops supplying it with oxygen, our work found that the brain can show signs of electrical recovery long into ongoing CPR,” he said in a statement.

In fact, not only does the brain survive — it functions at a high level.

Like a seemingly defunct computer rebooting, this neurological surge is believed to induce a super-focused state, possibly explaining why people might hear their surroundings in great detail — including medics’ death declarations — even though their body is technically dead.

This energy burst also allows these resurrectees to access everything in their mind simultaneously, hence the perception that their life is flashing before their eyes.

“As the brain shuts down, because of a lack of blood flow in death, the normal braking systems in the brain are removed, known as disinhibition,” Dr. Parnia explained. “This enables people to have access to their entire consciousness. All their thoughts, memories, all their emotional states, everything that they’ve ever done, which they relive through the perspective of morality and ethics.”

Along with satisfying morbid curiosity, this pioneering research could perhaps change the way doctors restart the heart or deal with brain injuries caused by cardiac arrest.

As a person who's had their heart stop to the point of experiencing death on more than one occasion:

Imagine if you couldn't see. Or smell. Or hear. Or touch. Or taste.

Imagine if when you closed your eyes, there wasn't just a lack of color, but also a lack of sound, or of sensation that attaches you to your body.

Being a brain in a dying (or dead) body is what I would imagine being a brain in a vat is like. You're "trapped". But you're also free in a really really weird way. Free of that migraine you might've had, free of the stress of daily life, and unburdened by the consequences of having a body. When you're there, you quickly realize the true form of the conscious mind. A vast void of sensational sensation-less bliss. Depending on the timing, it's either a curse or a gift.

Surrounded by loved ones? Lived a good life? Consider it a gift.

Filled with regret? Did it come at the wrong time? What a curse to behold.

Either way.. your thoughts.. when dead, exist in their purest state. For there is no sensory interruption. No outside presence to distract you from the dreams/nightmares of consciousness that itch at the insides of all our skulls.

You either rest in that void smiling, or you curse its enveloping aura until your last thought. Some are lucky, they experience visions of grandeur that embody their favorite divinity. Others not so much..

When you die.. if you ever come back.. you'll never experience a moment quiter than that void we all belong to. And in that dark yet peaceful thought, is the realization that the space you inhabit in that experience.. is a space we all share.

Kings. Queens. Beggars. Rich men. The poor and homeless. The gluttonous and the hungry. Black. White. Yellow. Red. Purple. Human or not. WE share it together. Killer or killed. Shooter or shot. Lifesaver or life-taker.

Now this doesn't mean you should go around "liberating" people. Because that liberation is something only the void decides to give when its ready. And in my experience, the more you disobey that rule of this existence we call life, well.. the more likely the void will curse you rather than bring you peace on the day you experience it.

There hasn't been a day quieter than the day I died. Even the deaf know nothing of the silence that place brings.

So be sure to live a good life. And to be good to others. Because when you die.. when ALL of us die.. you'll be alone in there. In that place we all share. And if you can't handle being alone with your thoughts now.. well good fucking luck buddy.

Source: I died a few times as a young boy due to a congenital disorder. It's been 20 years since then. I'm not going back until I've lived a damn good life worthy of that void again. I implore you to do the same. And don't bother with taking the easy way out either (or imposing it upon others), the void doesn't like that.

Survival rates for out of hospital cardiac arrests are around 9 pct average in the U.S/U.K and that's pretty low as it takes too long to get proper help.

So if you DON'T have these waves anymore, it's a pretty good bet that 'you' are gone. But my wife, and others I know, are organ donors. What lots of folks don't realize is that (for instance, how my wife's mom died) when you go to say goodbye in the hospital, they're still 'alive' and warm to the touch, and when you then have to leave them there it's immediately off to the harvesting table for them (if that's what they stipulated). Have to wonder how much of THAT they can feel, and if (suddenly realizing they're 'not actually gone yet') they have regrets far too late. It feels like at minimum, a lot of folks might now specifically amend their organ donation wishes to say "only if zero brain activity". For me, I can't donate because I'm sure they want HUMAN organs.... right?

My wife is signed up as a donor. I am going to mention that clause to her. I wonder if putting DONOR on your drivers license voids such exclusions.

I too am glad to be nonhuman and exempt from the entire issue.
