Since it happened five years ago, so late in his life, it's not like he will actually serve a long prison sentence. He will die obviously long before the end of his sentence, even if he was young. I think sometimes people are sentenced to hundreds of years in prison to avoid things like parole. In some states, someone sentenced to 25 - life could be eligible for parole. So that's why there are ridiculous sentences sometimes.

The reason they give bad guys sentences like those in this case, is to make a statement (both political and for future criminals). But in cases where they give something like 150 years, it's usually because of parole and future or automatic appeal issues. Sometimes they just charge for every specific and separate crime and at the end of the trial they add up to hundreds of years. Just for information, on murder cases, when District Attorneys choose to go for life in prison without parole instead of the death penalty...it's because of the automatic appeals process and/or difficulty in prosecution of a death case with the jury issues.
