Jared Fogle, former Subway spokesman, was jumped and beaten in a surprise attack at the Federal Correctional Institution, Englewood, in Colorado.

As reported by TMZ and confirmed by several other news outlets, Fogle was attacked on January 29 by an inmate with a storied criminal past, and was left bloodied and beaten in the minimum-security prison yard.

The attacker, Steven J. Nigg, 60, has been in the U.S. prison system since the ’70s, and a detective out of Arizona said he’s one of the “worst criminals” he’s ever encountered. He is currently being held in the federal jail on a weapons charge.

TMZ says that Nigg “pushed Fogle down and then unloaded a barrage of punches to his face.” Fogle was left with a bloody nose, a bruised face and multiple scratches on his neck. Nigg had very minor injuries.

Apparently, Nigg wanted to draw attention to the number of prisoners at the institution who were serving time for sex offences, his family members said. He was upset at the perceived special attention Fogle was getting.

“In his words, my uncle’s words, people convicted of these types of crimes, crimes against children, sexual predators, rapists, they shouldn’t be in a minimum-security prison,” Nigg’s nephew Jimmy said to azcentral.com. “He felt like it wasn’t fair. He [Fogle] gets to order any food he wants, he can use his money to do things. This guy is coming and prancing in like he can do anything he wants. [My uncle] wanted to send a message.”

Nigg was put into solitary confinement after the attack, said prison officials.

Fogle pleaded guilty in August to having sex with minors and distributing and receiving child pornography.

He was sentenced in November to 15 years and eight months in prison for possession and distribution of child pornography and having sex with underage prostitutes.

Word. He's fortunate he didn't get put into the old huck-a-buck (you don't want to know).

Low-Security Federal Prisons are full of them. They barely survive Medium, let alone High. The only reason they do so well in a Low is that the guards don't want people dying on their shifts, and many of the other inmates have spent years or even decades working their way down to a Low and don't want to mess up their time.

If any of you have a future stint in a Low to do, remember the following:
Magic the Gathering*
Music classes
The Library
The Chapel
Toastmasters
Damn near any non-physically-demanding activity that gets inmates away from the block but has a presence of guards


I'm not saying to avoid these places, but just be prepared. You will meet some absolute freaks, and you can go ahead and assume that nearly every old white guy wearing ill-fitting athletic attire is a convicted cho-mo. It's best not to even acknowledge their presence, lest your reputation be tarnished. What's worse, many of them aren't doing time for their first conviction. When I say freaks, I mean that in the worst way possible. If you are prone to violent outbursts, don't even go near these people. You'll finish your bid in solitary confinement, and believe me when I say that can be a miserable place.

*Exception here. Avoid Magic, and people that play it. I don't know what comes first, Magic cards or child pornography, but my theory is that they are absolutely connected. It could be possible to turn into a perv just by playing the game. I can't confirm this, but I did notice seemingly normal inmates drift off into weirdville after spending time with that crowd. YMMV.

All I know of Magic the Gathering is that it's a game played by nerdy and often creepy guys on TV, so...yeah.
