Re: Iraq | 500,000 Flee Mosul As Sunni Jihadists Pose 'mortal Threat' to Nation
Correction: that's the Pottery Barn rule of nation-building ("You break it, you bought it"), but you're correct in that it was Colin Powell who was reported to have advised George W. Bush accordingly with regards to Iraq prior to the 2003 invasion. The actual Powell doctrine is one of overwhelming force and was utilized during the first Desert Storm operation when we sent 400,000 troops to deal with Iraq. It's part of why I always wondered why we sent nearly half a million troops to beat Saddam's forces out of and back from the border with Kuwait the first time around, but sent only 150,000 to invade and occupy Iraq itself. That discrepancy is just further support for the argument that Iraq 2.0 was a war that by its initial design was never intended to be won. |

No big shock here...the news is saying they believe Stinger missiles have fallen into the hands of Sunni insurgents. "It is possible that the ISIS fighters acquired them from army bases they have taken over in recent days, the sources said." |

Shit was different back then though. Back then you could just march in to a country with your bollocks out, kill and rape as many people as it took until the leader of the country either surrendered or signed a treaty, and claim it as part of your 'empire' as the British did to damn near a third of the world. As a Brit it shames me to know what atrocities we committed back in the day. |

It doesn't bother me in the slightest. I love a good cup of tea and a chicken vindaloo and they are just 2 of the many treasures the Empire brought us. I didn't kill anyone so I don't feel shame.

Well, shame was probably the wrong word to use. Humbled was more what I was getting at. You're right though. The invaders of yesteryear shaped the wealth and power we possess today, and I guess we should be grateful in some sense. But the fact that it is a result of mercilessly setting out for world domination does kind of make you feel bad for all the people that were killed purely for their natural resources, or purely for being 'savages' or 'godless'. |

http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/...0ET11320140618 Speaking on live television to a crowd, Iran's President Hassan Rouhani made the clearest declaration yet that Tehran was prepared to mobilize. "Regarding the holy Shia shines in Karbala, Najaf, Kadhimiya and Samarra, we announce to the killers and terrorists that the big Iranian nation will not hesitate to protect holy shrines," he said. He said many people had signed up to go to Iraq to fight, although he also emphasized that Iraqis were prepared to defend themselves: "Thanks be to God, I’ll tell the dear people of Iran that veterans and various forces - Sunnis Shias and Kurds all over Iraq - are ready for sacrifice." |

That's what you get when you meticulously live your life according to a book written 2000 years ago. All 'civilised' people who practised their 'religion' back then were savages. The only problem is when you take such readings word for word in to modern day life...... |
