Baghdad was sacked by the mongols in 1258.

So, honestly, the strife in the area can be traced back to that invasion.

It goes back at least 5,000 years.

The people there have behaved essentially the exact same way for all that time.

Only the names have changed.

Saddam wasn't ideal, but he wasn't a religious zealot either. He was the cork in the bottle.

So much for freedom and democracy. It's completely lost on cultures that don't value it.

democracy always lost anyways, look at the great empires, none of them lasted forever, it is only a matter of time before it all collapses. I am always preparing when everybody will depend on themselves.

Fucking Tony Blair sticking his unwanted fucking nose in again, claiming that the invasion of Iraq didn't cause the crisis, but because we were there we now have to intervene again.

It absolutely caused they crisis. This is why the UN didn't finish off saddam in the first gulf war, they knew that whoever replaced him could be far more of a threat. I think they call it the Powell doctrine, which is basically if you break a nation you are responsible for fixing it.

I read that Iran has military units in Iraq fighting the insurgents, and the Kurds are holding their ground as well. This could very easily turn into a regional conflict, everybody in that area has a stake in the outcome.
This could go very, very shitty.
