(AP) — A North Carolina man is dead after police say he accidentally drank from a jar of gasoline and then smoked a cigarette. Havelock police received a 911 call about 9:55 p.m. Monday after 43-year-old Gary Allen Banning set himself on fire. Banning was transported to UNC Burn Center in Chapel Hill, where he died early Tuesday morning. City spokeswoman Diane Miller said investigators believe Banning was at a friend’s apartment when he apparently mistook a jar of gasoline sitting by the kitchen sink for a beverage. After taking a gulp, he spit the gas out and got some on his clothes. Sometime later, investigators say Banning went outside to smoke a cigarette and burst into flames. Havelock police and the city fire marshal are continuing their investigation into the accident. |

HAVELOCK — A Havelock man died in a hospital Tuesday morning after accidently setting himself on fire Monday night. Gary Allen Banning, 43, died at 5:53 a.m. Tuesday at the UNC Burn Center in Chapel Hill after the incident Monday night, according to Havelock police. A series of events Monday led to Banning’s death. Earlier in the day, he accidently drank from a jar that contained gasoline and spit it out, getting it on his clothes, according to Havelock police. He did not change his clothes, and later in the evening went to light a cigarette, igniting his clothes and himself. “It was just a freak incident,” said W.K. Preslar, investigator with the Havelock Police Department. Preslar explained that a resident of the apartment is a mechanic and uses gasoline to help clean the grease from his hands. He said Banning accidently drank the gasoline that was stored in a salsa jar near a kitchen sink. The incident took place in apartment B-9 at 200 Roosevelt Blvd. Police and fire crews were called to the scene at 9:55 p.m. Monday. Banning was transported to CarolinaEast Medical Center in New Bern and later to the UNC Burn Center with what police described as severe burns to his body. Preslar said the apartment in which the incident took place had minor damage and did not catch on fire. |

How could you not smell it? Even before you start to put gas in a car in an open area, you can smell it big time! What kind of jerkoff picks us a salsa jar, which obviously doesn't look like water, and drinks it?! Maybe I go too far towards a germaphobe, but, I would get a clean glass or wash it out first. |

The same kind of jerkoff that gets gasoline all over his clothes, doesn't change said clothes, then lights a cigarette while wearing gasoline-saturated clothes. |
