How Many People Have Been Killed by Guns Since Newtown?

As of this posting: 2,324 in just 75 days since the Newtown massacre. That's 31 per day.

The answer to the simple question in that headline was surprisingly hard to come by. So Slate and the Twitter feed @GunDeaths are collecting data for their crowdsourced interactive. Check it out to see the death-toll near you.

Re: How Many People Have Been Killed by Guns Since Newtown?

You are far more likely to die in an auto accident in USA:
Car Crash Stats: There were nearly 6,420,000 auto accidents in the United States in 2005.

The financial cost of these crashes is more than 230 Billion dollars. 2.9 million people were injured and 42,636 people killed.

About 115 people die every day in vehicle crashes in the United States -- one death every 13 minutes.

Here's a pop quiz. Rank the following in order of the number of American lives they claim in a typical year: food, guns, terrorists, flu and cars.

Ready? The most deadly are automobiles, which kill 117 Americans a day, or nearly 43,000 a year. Then comes flu, which (along with pneumonia, its associated disease) kills 36,000 people. Third is guns: 26,000 deaths. Fourth, food-borne illness: 5,000. And finally, terrorism, which in a typical year claims virtually no U.S. lives -- with horrific exceptions like 2001. But antiterrorism efforts get most of the attention and the resources.

Re: How Many People Have Been Killed by Guns Since Newtown?

Terrorism is just a buzzword used to justify spending $700,000,000,000 per year on US defense.

I'm pretty sure prescription drugs kill more americans than food guns terrorists flu and cars combined.

great post

interestingly enough, in that same time frame, about 3000 americans have died from painkiller overdoses, according to the cdc

guns still dont kill as many people as prescription pain killers....that total doesnt include the deaths from other drugs, just pain killers.

just thought i would throw that out there since we're talking about public safety and all

No, he died on 2/12/13 in San Bernardino county. The only death they list for that day and place is for Deputy Jeremiah MacKay, killed by Dorner.

Re: How Many People Have Been Killed by Guns Since Newtown?

Chicago has 65 murders and Washington D.C. has 15 since NT. Don't they both have registration, ban "assault weapons" and "high" capacity magazines?
