Here in East Tennessee we have European hornets, they look a lot like these, but are much smaller. At their largest they grow to about 1 and a half inches. Most people call them Japanese hornets, thankfully they are wrong, the bastards build huge nests in the walls of houses. They aren't overly aggressive though, I have some how dodged the stinger, and I have been stung by every other stinging inscect in this area.

Those things are pretty cool, they're not really dangerous to humans at all either. They're really non-agressive and almost never sting unless you step on them or grab them or something, and there stings hurt less than a honey bee's. Its usually the sting-less males that get really agressive and buzz people during mating season. Also they don't kill the cicadas, they paralyze them and bring them back to their burrows where they lay their eggs on them for their kids to eat.
