Stephen Hawking believes humanity has less than 1,000 years left on Earth and must embark on more space exploration to help mankind ‘escape beyond out fragile planet’.

The 71-year-old revealed his fears while speaking at Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre in Los Angeles this week.

‘We must continue to go into space for humanity. We won’t survive another 1,000 years without escaping our fragile planet,’ he said.

‘Spreading out into space will have an even greater effect. It will completely change the future of the human race and maybe determine whether we have any future at all.’

It comes as Nasa’s planetary science budget, which would be central to finding another Earth, was cut by $300 million this year to fund other projects.

Professor Hawking, who has been in a wheelchair since being diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease 50 years ago, also toured a stem cell laboratory focused on trying to slow the progression of the illness.

Professor Hawking is famous for bringing his concepts to the masses through his best-selling books, including A Brief History Of Time.

He has spent his career decoding the universe, constructing theory and research on black holes and the origin of matter.

He also reiterated his belief at the conference in why humanity exists, referring to M-theory, a unifying physics and mathematics theory which includes the suggestion that there are higher dimensions in space-time.

‘To understand the universe at the deepest level, we have to understand why is there something rather than nothing,’ he said.

‘If you understand how the universe operates, you control it in a way.’

So first we wreck this planet, the move on to trash the solar system, after that we move on and duck up the entire galaxy. The rest of the universe will eventually see us as a race of beings that if we can't destroy something, we miss on it, and they will evict us.

I seriously doubt humans will make it another 200 years without some serious social, financial, and environmental changes.

Expansion into space are our only hope. But it won't happen soon, it will be 200 years til we master the technology to reach other star systems - if even possible. But I think it is, not Star Trek- wise space travel but some semi-faster-than-light travel.

The problem is that while the planet itself has all the prerequisites to survive for even more than 1,000 years, its hopes to survive into the future for longer than 100/150 years are extremely close to ZERO. Because of the presence of HUMANS. We are poisoning the air, the water, the food that we breathe, drink and eat. We kill animals for selling sharks fins, or elephants ivory, or tigers skins, or just for fun.
And still, some people believe that "humans are the most intelligent and most special animals on the planet".
In my humble opinion humans are the most dangerous animal on earth, and many of them are MUCH more stupid than chickens .
So stupid that one of the most brilliant scintists in the world is focusing on what will happen in 1,000 years to the planet while there are roughly 150,000 people a day starving to death(end of venting).

Old news stephen as we've been hearing this for decades now from diff people but don't think governments that fund space agencies focus on that right now.
