Investigators probing Oscar-winner Gene Hackman's death revealed the bottle of pills discovered in his home was now being considered a 'very important' piece of evidence.

Santa Fe Sheriff Adam Mendoza told the Today Show on Friday that the prescription bottle, discovered with pills all around it on the countertop within the 95-year-old's home, 'is something of concern'.

Three medications were removed from the home, including Diltiazem, a blood pressure medication; a thyroid medication, and Tylenol, according to Huffington Post, which cited a search warrant.

Mendoza said the medication has been passed onto the medical examiner's office to help them make a cause of death determination. It could be months before the toxicology results come back.

'We’re looking at that specifically and other medications, of course, that were possibly in the residence,' he told Today.

'But we’re hoping [the report] comes sooner than later so we can answer some of these questions and hopefully it’ll help us in our investigation to help determine… the matter and cause of death.'

Those are standard meds for old people and not life threatening. Don't see why someone is calling this "very important."

maybe they're more referring to the pills being scattered next to her/countertop as that would be suspicious in my book.

He was found wearing casual clothing (grey tracksuit bottoms, a blue long-sleeve shirt, and brown slippers), with a walking cane and sunglasses nearby, leading detectives to suspect he may have fallen suddenly.

Dr. Michael Baden, not directly involved in the case, suggested a possible scenario where Hackman, who had a history of heart disease and a pacemaker, suffered a cardiac arrest, and Arakawa may have died subsequently while attempting to assist him, potentially collapsing herself. Items collected from the scene include two cell phones and medications.

The front door was found open by a maintenance worker and 1 dead German Shepherd found in a bathroom closet near Arakawa. Two others were found alive outside.

So yeah maybe she found him on the floor and ran to the bathroom to get his pills and also suffered some heart attack before locking the dog up because the dog was in her way. You know how dogs can follow you around in front of your feet when you're suddenly running through the house.

It'll be interesting to get to the bottom of this one. As of now it sounds like the wife died first and Gene died on his way to get help. I just hope the dog didn't suffer.

Gene Hackman's dog was misidentified as other mysteries persist around actor's death

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — While investigating the deaths of actor Gene Hackman and his wife, pianist Betsy Arakawa, authorities misidentified a deceased dog, which resolves one of the mysteries of the case.

The couple's German shepherd, named Bear, survived along with a second dog named Nikita, but their kelpie mix, Zinna, died, according to Joey Padilla, owner of the Santa Fe Tails pet care facility that is involved in the surviving dogs' care.

The dog that died “was always attached to Betsy at the hip and it was a beautiful relationship,” Padilla said in an email statement. “Zinna went from being a returned shelter dog to this incredible companion under Betsy’s hand.”

Authorities have been searching for answers after the deaths of Hackman and Arakawa, whose partially mummified bodies were discovered on Feb. 26 at their Santa Fe home. Hackman and Arakawa may have died up to two weeks earlier, Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza said.

Authorities did not perform a necropsy on Zinna, who was found in a kennel in a bathroom closet near Arakawa, a sheriff's office spokesperson said. Investigators initially noted the discovery of a “deceased brown in color German-Shepard canine.”

Avila acknowledged that sheriff’s deputies initially misidentified the breed of the deceased dog.

“Our deputies, they don’t work with canines on a daily basis,” she said.

Maybe they were poisoned, like a case on forensic files where a man was trying to kill somebody through the pills and ended up killing the wrong people.
