A 42-year-old man is facing charges of terrorism and assault with intent to murder after 11 shoppers were stabbed at a Walmart supermarket in the US state of Michigan.

An assailant used a folding knife to stab five men and six women, including a Walmart employee, on Saturday afternoon in Traverse City.

The victims, ranging in age from 21 to 84, are all expected to survive. The suspect, Bradford James Gille, is due to be arraigned on Monday or Tuesday.

Gille, a Michigan resident, has lived in Cheboygan, Emmet, and Presque Isle counties. He has a criminal history including assault, drug possession (cocaine and paraphernalia in Florida, 2012-2014), vandalism, public intoxication (2015), and domestic violence (2007-2008).

Gille was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia around 1999, as confirmed by his mother in a 2007 interview. Court records indicate a history of mental health issues, with a court order issued on July 25, 2025, by Emmet County Probate Court to detain him due to unspecified concerns, though deputies could not locate him before the attack.

Gille is reportedly the author of a self-published book, The Book of I Jesus Christ (January 2024), described as an account of spiritual revelations and past lives. He also may have been involved in amateur mixed martial arts.

Witnesses reported Gille yelling about being a soldier and Walmart shoppers being “bad people,”.

Emmet County Sheriff’s deputies were searching for Gille with a court order late Friday and early Saturday, July 25-26, 2025, but failed to locate him before the attack.

Gille faces one count of terrorism and 11 counts of assault with intent to murder. The terrorism charge is based on the intent to instill fear in the community, with a potential life sentence if convicted.
