Three people were killed in a shooting at a state park in eastern Iowa Friday morning and the suspected gunman is also dead, police said.

Police responded to reports of the shooting at the the Maquoketa Caves State Park Campground before 7 a.m., Mike Krapfl, special agent in charge of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, said at a news conference.

He said the park remains closed but that there is no longer a threat to the public.

Two parents and their 6-year-old daughter were fatally shot Friday at an Iowa state park, while their 9-year-old son survived the attack, officials said.

The suspected gunman was also found in the park dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.

Responding officers found the bodies of the three victims at their campsite. As they canvassed and evacuated the area, officers learned there was a camper registered at the park who was unaccounted for, authorities said.

"They noted that there was one camper unaccounted for that they believed could have possibly been armed," Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation Special Agent Mike Krapfl told ABC affiliate WQAD in Moline, Illinois. "They searched the area for that individual and then later on, about 11 a.m., we found a deceased individual inside the park."

DCI identified the suspect as Anthony Orlando Sherwin, 23. The agency does not have any information on a motive, Mitch Mortvedt, DCI assistant director, told ABC News Saturday.

DCI identified the victims Friday night as Tyler Schmidt and Sarah Schmidt, both 42, and Lula Schmidt, 6. The family was from Cedar Falls.

Cecilia Sherwin, Anthony Sherwin’s mother, told The World-Herald in an email Saturday that the family refuses “to believe the news.”

Cecilia Sherwin said they were camping at the park Friday morning when she heard yelling and two gunshots. A young boy ran up to the Sherwins’ campsite yelling for help and told her that a man wearing black had shot his family, she said.

Cecilia Sherwin said her son was wearing green, not black, and no black clothing was found in the area. She also said they were legally traveling with a gun, which was located in a secure container.

“We think (Anthony) might have sensed trouble and grabbed the gun for safety,” Cecilia Sherwin said. “We refuse to believe the news. We are deeply saddened as he had so much to live for and gave us no indication that anything was wrong.”

A review of Nebraska criminal justice records found no signs that Sherwin had a criminal history.


Can't imagine what the motive is but maybe he heard voices in his head or there's something weird going on they haven't found out yet.

Dunno if they were climate changing protesting millennials or not but more of these young adults having a few screws loose it seems. Maybe caused by the pandemic lockdown(s) or not getting psychological help due to cutbacks etc.

I'm not trying to be a dick but I doubt any label other than "disturbed" can fully explain why he, or anyone, would do something like this.

Slapping general labels on the bad apples tends to create a situation where everyone else that falls under that label is guilty by association or judged as a whole.

For example... everyone who lives in the US, is often times labeled as "gun tards" or the like... or this, that, and the other. We are not all the same. lol Most of us are completely normal people but we are judged as a whole based on what a small percentage of our population does and how our Government behaves/rules us. It's really getting tiresome.

I am so anti-label but it's so prolific and inherent. I think I'm "fucked" in this regard.
