Re: Food Stamp Ridicule Humiliates Woman At The Supermarket
Having to rely on government assistance is no fun. When I was young we were on food stamps. My mother refused to go to the store, so I rode my bike twice a week to get what we needed. I hated it because a few of my school mates worked at the grocery store (part time summer jobs), so I would hang around either until I saw an adult cashier or someone I didn’t know, then check out as fast as I could. Back then food stamps were not on a card like this lady has; they were paper bills. I hated it..always was so embarrassed and ashamed. For someone to make another feel this way on purpose, out of callous disregard…I feel for the poor woman.

Re: Food Stamp Ridicule Humiliates Woman At The Supermarket
I feel for you, Spitfire. I have never gotten Food stamps or any assistance (other than student grants) but I understand that sometimes people need it. Just because some people abuse the system doesn't mean that everyone who receives assistance is screwing the system. At this point in my life, if I found myself in need of food stamps I feel like I've paid in to the system, so it should be there to help me. No one should go hungry. People need food to live. There shouldn't be any shame in accepting food stamps or other forms of assistance if it is needed. If anyone judges people using food stamps, they have obviously never been in the situation to need it or their opinion would be different. This guy shouldn't be a manager of anything. The poor woman is on dialysis. What else is she supposed to do??

Re: Food Stamp Ridicule Humiliates Woman At The Supermarket
Whilst I have never used such things like food stamps, they will always be seen as a means of lazy people getting free stuff. Much like benefits here in the UK along with disability benefits. The system is abused so much that it costs more and more every year and then those who work hard see some slackers get a free ride they go " |

Re: Food Stamp Ridicule Humiliates Woman At The Supermarket
The manager should have been fired! It's none of his business how she pays. I'd never go back to the store unless he was gone. He doesn't know her story and one day he may need it. I had to be on public assistance for two years. It's not glamourous and I expected to have my job I had to leave due to a couple of car accidents in 1998 forever. I left there with no public assistance until I got another job. I did keep my Cobra and workers' compensation, or whatever it is. After they downsized my last job in 2005 or 2006, and I had medical issues adding up over the years, I got SSI in 2009. They wanted to still give me $12.00 a month, but, I turned it down. I figured someone needed it more than I. Medicaid was better with free medical and dental, but, less cash and a decent amount of food. Medicare sucks! They deduct from your check, although you are free to choose your insurance. When the new year starts, all of my prescriptions are high. Figures the expensive ones don't have generics. The last quarter or so, the prescriptions are, in some cases, $100 or so cheaper. Things can always be worse. |
