Makes me think of cartoons when they go fishing and catch a boot... Less cute this way.

Maybe sharks don't care for the shoes?

Or nail polish

They just bite and suck off what they want and leave the rest

There must have been one helluva feeding frenzy after the tsunamis and a boom in predatory fish too.
I wonder if there has been (reported or most likely not to stop panic) an increase in human attacks as these predators should have been gorging themselves on human flesh for a long while and got a taste for it and began to recognise the human shape as easy food.....

Severed Foot in Shoe Found at Jersey Shore

A Philadelphia family is waiting to find out if DNA, from a severed foot found inside a shoe at the Jersey Shore, is a match for their loved one who has been missing since last year.

A fisherman discovered the skeletal remains of a foot inside a size 5 1/2 tennis shoe that had washed ashore back in August at Corson's Inlet State Park in Ocean City.

"We're just praying that it doesn't belong to Franchesca, just like anyone who is missing a loved one," said Christine Dior.

Dior's sister, Franchesca Alvarado, left her home on her way to Atlantic City in March of 2012 and was never heard from again.

The 22-year-old mom, who friends and family called, "Checka," had plans to start college before her disappearance. Family members say she left her home in the Hunting Park section of the city with a man she was friends with.

"It's heart wrenching when you get a phone call when you are watching the news and you see a body has been found. Your heart just stops," said Dior.

NBC10's Luann Cahn talked with the man who took Alvarado to Atlantic City the night she was last seen. He says that Alvarado left him that night and he came home alone.

No one has been charged with Alvarado's disappearance.

"We will not rest, we will not stop looking for her," said Dior.

PHILADELPHIA - September 25, 2013 (WPVI) -- Family members of a missing Philadelphia woman have been told that a skeletal foot, found in a shoe that washed up in Ocean City, New Jersey, likely belongs to their loved one.

That woman, 22-year-old Franchesca "Cheka" Alvarado, had been missing since March 2012.

The shoe was found by a fisherman back in early August at Corson's Inlet State Park.

Family members told Action News they were informed by police that the foot was tentatively identified as Alvarado's.

A Facebook page dedicated to finding Alvarado was recently updated to reflect the finding.

Alvarado was last seen by her sister at her home in the 4200 block of Darien Street. Her sister said Alvarado was going to Atlantic City with a friend.

She hasn't been seen since.

Alvarado was the mother of a small child, who was three years old when she vanished.

There was no further word from police on Alvarado's fate.

Re: Fisherman Finds Shoe With Remains of Foot Inside on Jersey Shore * update

On the west coast of Canada this has happened about 10 times now....... There's a documentary about it. None of the feet have been identified.
"At least a dozen detached feet have washed up along the coast of British Columbia and Washington state since 2007, most inside shoes or boots, and including at least one matching pair."
Dec 13, 2017
It sounds like the scenario for a thrilling TV crime drama, but in a mysterious - and very real - set of circumstances, a human foot has washed up on Canada's British Columbia coastline. It's the 13th dismembered foot that's been discovered there in 10 years.

The New York Times reports the latest limb was identified by a Rottweiler named Taz, who had been walking on the beach with her owner, Mike Johns. As the dog sniffed its way along the shore on Vancouver Island, it paid particular attention to a tangled bed of kelp, and on further inspection, Johns discovered it was actually a tibia and fibula attached to a left human foot.

The foot was still contained in a white sock inside a black running shoe.

"Our early analysis suggests these are human remains and we will do further investigation and testing," CNN reports a spokesman for the British Columbia Coroners Service said in a statement. Both the Coroners Service and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) will now work to identify who the foot belonged to by combing local through missing person's records.

But the mystery doesn't stop there: 12 other human feet have been washed up along the west coast of Canada over the past 10 years, and it's unclear why the same, unusual discovery keeps recurring.

The Coroners Service spokesman was insistent there isn't a link between the cases, however, despite the extraordinary similarity.

Eight of the feet have so far been successfully identified, and were confirmed to have come from six different people - but none were found to have died by foul play, explains the New York Times. Some died as a result of accidents, some by suicide.

The first dismembered foot washed up in the summer of 2007, and by July 2008 four more had arrived in quick succession. The most recent limb - until the one Mike Johns and his dog found this week - was discovered in February 2016, attached to a blue New Balance trainer.

But despite the mysterious nature of the feet, no firm explanation has ever been found. There have been theories that the severed feet have materialised as a result of doomed boat trips, plane crashes, serial killers or human traffickers. But as far as the authorities are concerned, it's just an unusual coincidence.

There could be a scientific reason the human bones keep washing up on the coastlines of British Columbia. As the New York Times explains, during winter months the state experiences 'king tides', which are abnormally high and can cause flooding along the shores. This, as well as the fact that shoes float, could serve as an explanation as to why the remains keep making their way to this particular area.

But it remains to be seen what investigators will discover about the latest foot; whether this one will be chalked up as an innocent death like the others, or if there's something more sinister at play.
