Fisherman Finds Shoe With Remains of Foot Inside on Jersey Shore * update
http://abclocal.go.com/wpvi/video?id...53&pid=9198496 By Erin McClam, Staff Writer, NBC News A man fishing on the beach at Corson's Inlet State Park, Ocean City, NJ, discovered a sneaker with skeletal remains inside on Tuesday. A fisherman on the New Jersey Shore made an unsettling discovery — a black, high-top sneaker with the remains of a foot inside. State police asked Wednesday for any information from the public. The fisherman found the shoe Tuesday afternoon. It was an Adidas size 5½, for the right foot, and some of the toes had nail polish on them, police said. Police said they had not determined the age of the person. They said the remains would be sent to a state anthropologist for DNA testing. The shoe was found at Corson’s Inlet State Park, about 15 miles down the shore from Atlantic City. At least a dozen detached feet have washed up along the coast of British Columbia and Washington state since 2007, most inside shoes or boots, and including at least one matching pair. Forensics experts have noted that the relative weakness of the ankle can cause a decomposing body to separate there. Photo by New Jersey State Police |

Not surprising to me a Philly native. I have found all kinds of things washed up on shore. Almost as disturbing as the the foot in the sneaker were syringes as a child easily could have stepped on it.

The news says the toenails were painted, but, aren't sure of the gender. I don't know if they can determine the age by the remains found, but, that is a very small shoe for a male. |

On the west coast of Canada this has happened about 10 times now....... There's a documentary about it. None of the feet have been identified.

These feet probably came from someone who drowned or committed suicide by jumping from a bridge. The feet separate easily from decomposition or animals nibbling at them. Unlike hands though, the feet have shoes 'protecting' them a bit, and also maybe making them more buoyant?

The shoes help make them buoyant, so when the body hits a certain stage of decomp, the air pockets in the sole of the show gently pull the foot off and sent it to the surface. I read an article that it happened enough that they looked in to it and the BC feet are most likely from tsunamis. And where they wash up is actually helping them get more detailed maps of currents. You can probably still find it archived on AP.
