A RETIRED policeman and his teenage son were stabbed after *giving refuge to a *terrified young boy being chased by a gang of thugs.
Edward Thompson, 18, was *in a critical condition last night after suffering a punctured lung.
His father, Martin, was stabbed in his side after the gang burst into their home where the lad was hiding after begging them for help.
Inspector Vanessa Eyles, of West Midlands Police, said last night: “This is a horrific, unprovoked attack on a public-spirited father and son who were trying to stop trouble.”
Yesterday Mr Thompson – whose wife, Jane, died from cancer last year – told how his Good Samaritan act almost ended in tragedy.
The father of three, 53, said: “If someone comes to you and asks for help you have to do everything you can to help them.
“We probably saved that young boy’s life, but it’s pretty scary to think someone would want to stab someone so much they would force their way into a stranger’s home to get at them. My son and I are big guys but what if it was a little old lady’s house or someone with kids.”
The attack happened just before 10pm on Saturday when Mr Thompson answered a *frantic knock on the door at the family’s semi-detached home in West Heath, Birmingham.
An Asian youth, aged around 16, burst in shouting: “I’m being chased. Someone is going to stab me.” Mr Thompson was then confronted by two teenage boys and a girl.
He said: “The girl was shouting and saying that the boy in my house had threatened her brother and he was going to ‘Get it’.
“I told her no one was ‘getting anything’ and went to shut the door but the two boys pushed past me.”
Mr Thompson, who was with West Midlands Police for 30 years and is now a civilian administrator, said Edward tried to help him tackle the gang after he was repeatedly punched. They all spilled into the *garden where Mr Thompson and Edward were then stabbed.
He said: “Edward was sitting on top on one of the boys and then I realised he had blood all down the back of his shirt. I shouted, ‘Edward you’ve been stabbed’. The two lads and girl ran away. I went over to Edward and I noticed I had blood covering me too. I was stabbed in my left-hand side and Edward had a punctured lung. This morning I went to Edward’s bedside and he squeezed my hand and smiled and gave me a thumbs up.”
A 15-year-old is being questioned in connection with the attack.
