The fact remains that the caller stated it was a "kid" with a probably "fake gun" and police responded with more force than I feel was needed.

I've seen this several times in the discussions by several people. You have to take into account, the operator can not just take a random callers word for it, with no predetermined credentials in firearm expertise to make an assessment of real or fake, from a distance.

As far as "kid, I was once reported to police as a kid, and I was 35 years old. (reckless driving deal )

Not really making excuses for police, but this circumstances lays in both victim, and police as far as blame.

Just for argument sake, people tend to use irrelevant points.

You think this was a smart approach by police if they actually believed it was an adult with a gun who had been pointing it at people? Hell no. They would have risked their own lives because they were too exposed the way they rolled up.

I agree completely.. If a 12 year old boy knows to look both ways when crossing the street, he knows not to point a bb gun at people especially Police. In the same sense police also know not to roll up on a possible active shooter situation and leave only the option of him or them getting shot.

Why was the boy not complying with the officers? It is really heartbreaking for such a young boy to die but it was stated that the officers did communicate with him to surrender to them. Kid was old enough to know what happens when you fuck with an officers life, especially in a bad area. Ultimately the dispatcher should of made it clear to the officer that the gun was prob a toy.
