Car Ploughs Through Melbourne CBD Killing 1 & Injuring 20 -

DEVELOPING
Police to address media after car hits pedestrians in Melbourne's CBD

VICTORIA 2:20pm January 20, 2017
Major police operation underway in Melbourne CBD as car ploughs through Bourke St mall.

Melbourne's CBD is in lockdown and witnesses are reporting horrific scenes after a car ploughed through Bourke Street Mall, with one confirmed dead.

Police say a man has been arrested and the situation is now under control, with ambulance services confirming as many as 20 people have been hurt after the rampage began shortly after 1:30pm.

Police are expected to give an update shortly - watch live above

CCTV shows an older model maroon red Commodore driving in wild circles outside Flinders St station, missing pedestrians by centimetres.

The driver then proceeded to drive a distance of two blocks at speeds of at least 60km/h, leaving a "mass of bodies" in his wake, according to one witness.

Video taken from a convenience store shows a horde of people rushing frantically inside.

An overturned baby pram has been photographed at the scene, with one witness telling Sky News he was told the infant, believed to be "three or four" "may not have made it" – though those reports are yet to be verified.

The Royal Melbourne Children's hospital has confirmed four admissions as a result of "an incident on Bourke Street".

In a bizarre coincidence, the former Victorian police commissioner Christine Nixon, was on the scene.

Ambulance Victoria have said it is believed a car has injured a "number of people" on Bourke Street, and says paramedics are assessing 20 people, a number of whom have serious injuries.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the exact circumstances of the event are still being determined but the situation is now under control.

"We will provide further information when it comes to hand," the spokeswoman said.

Witness Matthew Edwards has told nine.com.au that he saw the "car had come up on to the footpath and ran people over for a block or two."

"Someone was hit out the front of Myer and another person was laying on the ground in a pool of blood in front of the Commonwealth building.

"Police were stopping people from going any further, saying 'you don't want to go up there' which means it much have been pretty bad."

Mr Edwards said witnesses were quick to grab their mobile phones as police swarmed on the area while paramedics treated victims.

"People were making a human barricade around a lady bleeding on the footpath. She was laying on her stomach – there was blood everywhere."

He said the car had mowed people down in the exact place he was standing only moments earlier. Another witness said they saw the driver "doing burnouts, screaming to a lot of people...it's like something out of a movie."

More to come.

Re: Car Ploughs Through Melbourne CBD Killing 1 & Injuring 20 -

Australian Associated Press
At least one person is dead and 20 others are injured after a rogue car ploughed through pedestrians in Melbourne's Bourke St mall.

A man dressed only in red underwear has been arrested at the Elizabeth St end of the mall, and Ambulance Victoria is treating at least 20 people.

The mangled wreckage of half a pram is stuck on the bonnet of the car, while what appears to be the other half is further up the mall at a pedestrian crossing on William St.

"There was a car that just sped along the footpath and hit people," a witness told police at the scene.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said at this early stage they believe the man driving the car has struck a number of pedestrians in the vicinity of Bourke and Queen Streets just before 2pm on Friday.

"Emergency services are assisting multiple patients but at least one person has been confirmed deceased," the police statement said.

"Pedestrian access has been closed on Bourke Street between William and Swanston streets."

There were unconfirmed reports of shots being fired before the man was arrested.

"There's someone on the middle of the ground and there's blood all over the street," Rishi Hathiramani, a CBD shopkeeper, told AAP.

"I've seen accidents but never this bad.

"It's pretty brutal."

A number of CBD businesses are in lockdown, while others have been evacuated.

"A heap of people ran into my store, it was horrible. Half of my staff are in tears," a Strandbags manager told AAP.

City office worker William Mulholland said he came out of a laneway and saw a number of bodies lying on the pavement receiving CPR from police and emergency workers.

He said his friend came out of the RACV building on Bourke St and saw a body lying on the pavement in front of him.

"He said he heard two shots, coming from the direction of King St," Mr Mulholland told AAP.

One witness told ABC radio he saw the car travelling along the footpath.

"It was a maroon Commodore travelling easily 70km/hr on the footpath. We heard thumps and there was people flying everywhere," he said.

Another witness was in the Deloitte building on Bourke Street and saw a suspect under police guard.

"The suspect is lying on his back, he's cuffed," he told 3AW.

"There's a crashed car... completely wrecked and over the top of that car was a pram.

He said he saw a child being stretchered off by paramedics.

Drunk driver? Seems like it with an asshole being arrested in his underwear.

Could also be another terrorist attack as it carries the hallmarks.

The culprits name is Dimitrious Gargasoulas and his facebook page is here: www.facebook.com/S1KUNT

Read through the statuses and comments from him... chilling.

There's numerous videos taken from bystanders, I can provide FB links but can't download them and reupload.

https://www.facebook.com/jeff.richar...05383196465254

this one is taken from inside the black SUV stopped at the traffic lights:

This one is the aftermath. Take note of the baby pram/stroller at the end. The pram was ran into and the baby was rushed to hospital by police, who didn't even wait for an ambulance. The baby was said to be only 3 months old and has sadly died.

Someone with good technical skills may want to download these videos and reupload, before they are taken down by Facebook. Many people are reporting them.

Re: Car Ploughs Through Melbourne CBD Killing 1 & Injuring 20 -

Some crazy druggie with mental issues
great vid finds
Below is what we know about the attack.

A 26-year-old man drove his car through Bourke St Mall and several intersections, hitting dozens of people.
He was shot by police and arrested at the scene, before being taken to hospital for treatment of a bullet wound, believed to be in his arm and non-life threatening.
Three people were killed, including a man and woman in their 20s and a young child.
At least 24 of those injured are in various hospitals around Melbourne, including four children. At least five are in critical condition.
An infant in a pram was hit by the car and is in a critical condition.
Police believe it was a deliberate act, coming at the end of a suspended police chase, and have confirmed it had no links to terrorism.
Witnesses reported the man doing burnouts and doughnuts near Flinders St station, leaning out of his window and yelling at bystanders.
It’s believed the man was involved in a stabbing at Windsor early this morning. Police allege he and his brother fought at a house, and their mother was also assaulted.
The man left the scene and was driving a car with a woman beside him, initially believed to be a hostage. She got out of the car at Bolte bridge before he drove into the city.
The man is known to police, with an “extensive” background of family violence, and known mental health issues, and drug use.
Victorian premier Daniel Andrews thanked emergency services and bystanders who assisted those injured, and said: “we can be confident that we are stronger than this evil criminal act”.
Police urged people to stay out of the city if possible while homicide investigations continued at the scene and roadblocks disrupt traffic.
