I was always told if you get lost in the wilderness with your dog, DO NOT EAT THE DOG. Your canine can help you find food, and is a lot more capable of hunting than an unequipped human.

Killing the thing that could be willing to get you food because you're in the moment and hungry has to be the dumbest damn thing I've ever heard of; survival or not.

Now for you K9 eating survivalists i'll reveal something else. Did you ever stop and wonder how he killed the dog? He bashed its head in with a rock. Yep, the loyal companion that saved his life just days before got its skull caved in as a reward for service rendered.
I'm not familiar with the terrain he was in but in my experience if there is water and life then there is food, so unless the dog had been mortally wounded i can see no real reason for what he did.
There are certain types of people i wouldn't go camping with, that guy is one of them.

it went a bit different then was told in the newspapers according to a friend of him.

After an uneventful first month, his campsite was attacked by a bear. The huge animal destroyed a lot of his survival equipment and stole his food.
It is believed his dog chased the bear away, saving Lavoie's life.

He was armed with two rifles so managed to hunt wild game and fish. However, two thirds of the way down the descent, between Lake Mattagami and the remote village of Waskaganish he badly injured his ankle.

The climb was incredibly treacherous, with steep descents of around 40 feet, so there was no way he could continue.

He decided to stop and allow his ankle heal enough so he could carry on. After about a month, taking him through to around late September he tried to continue, but by this stage the river had started to freeze up and he was stranded. His only option was to stop and wait for rescue.

Lavoie is not particularly close to his family and, as they were used to him going on his expeditions, they only reported him missing after three months.

Lavoie's food and ammunition quickly ran out, leaving him cold, desperate and starving.
Provincial police officer Benoit Coutu said: 'With the weather and storms, his tent and sleeping bad we're torn and wet. He had no matches.'

He took his boots and socks off to dry, but with night temperatures of around 14F, they froze solid. At that point, feeling he had no other option Lavoie took the heartbreaking decision to kill his dog, hitting it over the head with a rock and eating his corpse.

Even after that he survived for another seven days without food before he was eventually rescued, emaciated and walking barefoot with a limp in three feet of snow.

So shocked that he may finally have survived, Lavoie thought he was hallucinating when he heard the helicopter approach, rescuers said.

One of the agents who found him said he had left his overturned canoe with crossed oars as a sign of distress. He and his tattered tent were a little further inland protected from the wind.

The canadian shield especially in the north is not a fun place to muck about in, a shit ton of snow... its basically rock and scattered conifer trees, the only thing to eat is game.
