..or why he didn't have a weapon to protect himself up there in "bear country".

Hell, even if he'd had a .22 cal rifle or an air rifle he could've lived on small game till help arrived.
got that even a simple sling shot would have came in handing for at least taking rabbits or something

What a hike! Looking on google maps it seems to be 100-120km from the two locations. Poor dog... if only he was a better shot or he brought more ammo, his dog would probably still be alive today. I mean why wouldn't you bring an excess amount of ammo when your going on a expedition like this?

Damn, that had to be rough.

No telling what any of us would do after a week without food, let alone 3 months.
3 months? I could go for a "Hero Dog" right now! Do they sell those at Nathans?

The canadian shield especially in the north is not a fun place to muck about in, a shit ton of snow... its basically rock and scattered conifer trees, the only thing to eat is game.

Got this from wiki to help show:

Looks full of fresh food to me. Doesn't anyone do cadets or survival courses anymore?

Let's just go camping in bear country.

We can do it our way.

What could go wrong?
