Mark Halperin, an American journalist who hosts a program on MK and formerly was the political director of ABC News, has stated on his own show that the family of Ella Cook, one of the students killed at Brown University, was "targeted" by the shooter.

Ella Cook, the 19 year old Sophomore who was killed at Brown University, was the Vice President of Brown University's College Republicans chapter. Further unverified sources who were allegedly present in the room that the shooting took place in say that the shooter "repeatedly shot" Cook, and implied that Cook was clearly the target of the shooting; though these rumors cannot be verified yet.

Veteran reporter Mark Halperin suggested that Ella Cook, one of the two students killed during a shooting at Brown University on Saturday and the vice president of Brown’s College Republicans chapter, may have been “the target” of the attack during Monday’s edition of 2WAY’s The Morning Meeting.

“The Brown one’s a little complicated because I don’t know that any news organization has reported this, but I’ve been besieged with messages from people who are really concerned about the report — and again, I believe in being transparent here, if I were editing The New York Times, I don’t think I’d put it in the paper — but people are telling me that the family of-, I just need to look up her name, I apologize-,” began Halperin before one of his guests named Cook.

He then pressed on:

Thank you, thank you. That the family of Ella Cook, the Alabama young woman who was a sophomore, has been told that she was the target of what happened at Brown. I have no idea whether that’s true.

There’s other theories about why the person did what they did. But now that we don’t know who the the assailant is, it’s gonna be harder to say.

But if it’s true that she was targeted, that’s a big story because she was one of the most visible conservatives on that campus.

Don’t know that it’s true, but probably most of you don’t even know that that’s being alleged because you’d have to follow certain accounts on X, or have sources as I do who telling me that.

The Daily Caller’s Amber Duke, one of Halperin’s two guests, then submitted that there are “a couple of things” that “lend credence to that theory.”

“Typically, when we see mass school shooters, they don’t just stop and walk away, right? Usually they keep going until they’re apprehended by police, shot dead, or they kill themselves,” said Duke.

“And the other thing is if the police are telling Brown students that they are safe, they don’t have to shelter in place anymore, but they don’t have a suspect in custody, I think that also suggests that this was some kind of targeted attack.”

Typical speculation especially when it's about being left or right, again. We will know more when the shooter get caught, hopefully alive. In short, it could or could not be a targeted attack.

It's sad a bright student got killed but also sad that another student got killed: Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, a freshman from Uzbekistan aspiring to be a neurosurgeon.

A masked gunman entered the classroom during an economics exam review session, opened fire indiscriminately (firing around 40 shots), killed two students (Ella Cook and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov), and injured nine others.

Reports note she considered switching seats to sit near a friend but did not.

Witnesses and reports indicate students were scrambling to escape, and the fatalities occurred as victims like Cook and Umurzokov were moving toward the exit.

In a targeted attack she would have been killed directly and from these reports it seems he started to shoot randomly and perhaps both students were last to flee through a door and caught the most bullets?

Providence, Rhode Island Police have identified the suspected Brown University shooter and have issued a warrant for his arrest.

"Claudio Neves-Valente has been identified as the suspect, a 48 year old former student of Brown University and Portuguese national." - Colonel Perez, Chief of the Providence Police.

"He was found dead with a satchel, two firearms, and evidence in the car that matches exactly what we see at the scene here in Providence." - Peter Neronha, Attorney General of Rhode Island.

He is also suspected of the MIT nuclear scientist killing

Valente's body was discovered in a storage unit in Salem, New Hampshire, along with firearms. He died by suicide as authorities closed in. Investigators believe he acted alone.

He is a former Brown University graduate student in physics (enrolled fall 2000–spring 2001; withdrew in 2003).

Entered the U.S. initially on a student visa; became a permanent resident in 2017 via the diversity visa lottery program.

Last known address in Miami, Florida.

Tracked via rental car records, security footage, a citizen tip (including a confrontation on campus and a Reddit post), and financial probes.

Motive remains unknown.

His car was "observed intermittently" between Dec. 1 and Dec. 12 in the area of Brown University, police said.

The shooting took place on Saturday, Dec. 13, and suspect then returned to Massachusetts, where MIT professor Nuno Loureiro was shot at his home in Brookline on Monday, Dec. 15.

"Investigators identified the vehicle that he had rented in Boston and drove to Rhode Island," police said.

The vehicle was seen outside of Brown, and there was security footage that showed a person who resembled him.

Security footage also showed the suspect within a half-mile of Loureiro's apartment, and there was footage showing him entering "in the location of the professor's apartment.

When he was found dead Thursday he was dressed in the same clothes that he was seen wearing right after Loureiro's murder.
