Two people have been killed and several more critically injured in a shooting at Brown University, in Providence, Rhode Island.

A shooter dressed in black killed at least two people and wounded nine others at Brown University during final exams on the Ivy League campus. Hours after the shooting the suspect remained at large.

Brown University president Christina Paxson confirmed that the two people killed were students. Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said a shelter-in-place was in effect for the area and encouraged people living near the campus to stay inside and not to return home until it was lifted.

Eight people with gunshot wounds were taken to Rhode Island hospital, where six were in critical but stable condition, according to Kelly Brennan, a spokesperson for the hospital.

A ninth person was later found to have been injured, but was reportedly not in a critical situation.

Police released footage of the man they suspected to be behind the shooting late on Saturday, adding that some witnesses reported that the man, who could be in his 30s, may have been wearing a camouflage mask. The shooting happened inside a classroom.

University officials initially told students and staff that a suspect was in custody, before later saying that was not the case and that police were still searching for a suspect or suspects.

The mayor said a person preliminarily thought to be involved was detained but was later determined to have no involvement.

President Donald Trump told reporters that he had been briefed on the shooting and “all we can do right now is pray for the victims.” Earlier he claimed a suspect was in custody before rowing back on that statement and confirming the shooter was still at large.

The shooting occurred in the Barus + Holley building, a seven-story complex that houses the School of Engineering and physics department. According to the university’s website, the building includes more than 100 laboratories, dozens of classrooms and offices.

Brown, one of the America’s most prestigious colleges, has roughly 7,300 undergraduates and more than 3,000 graduate students.

A person of interest (identified in reports as 24-year-old Benjamin Erickson from Wisconsin, an Army veteran) was detained early Sunday but released late Sunday night, as evidence pointed elsewhere. The manhunt continues.

at least two students on campus (Mia Tretta and Zoe Weissman) were survivors of prior school shootings (2019 Saugus High and 2018 Parkland).

This event marks a tragic addition to U.S. school shootings, occurring on the eve of the 13th anniversary of the Sandy Hook shooting.

One of the shooting deaths at Brown University was Ella Cook, the Vice President of the Brown Republicans.

She was reportedly shot first and shot several times. Seems very targeted.

Mark Halperin, an American journalist who hosts a program on MK and formerly was the political director of ABC News, has stated on his own show that the family of Ella Cook, one of the students killed at Brown University, was "targeted" by the shooter.

Ella Cook, the 19 year old Sophomore who was killed at Brown University, was the Vice President of Brown University's College Republicans chapter. Further unverified sources who were allegedly present in the room that the shooting took place in say that the shooter "repeatedly shot" Cook, and implied that Cook was clearly the target of the shooting; though these rumors cannot be verified yet.

The media seriously treated this person-of-interest as if he was the actual perpetrator (mentioned his background, speculated motive, etc) just for it not even be the dude in the first place. Defamed him and put his life in danger. Consequences, repercussions? Forget it. What an embarrassment this country has become. Arresting the wrong person and stating you're not looking for any other leads at this point in time, all the while the actual perpetrator is getting farther and farther away. Then the next day you do a media conference stating you have no current leads and are begging the public for their help via mass-surveillance.
