After Son Injured Hit and Run, CCTV Shows Father Did It

Father who launched Facebook campaign to find the 'hit-and-run' motorist who ran his 15-month-old son over discovers it was HIM and he hadn't noticed.
  • Jamie Ellison accidentally ran over his 15-month-old son on his driveway
  • He was unaware he struck his son dropping his daughters to school
  • The father-of-three launched a Facebook campaign seeking information
  • After discovering the truth he said 'the guilt will live with me forever'

A father has admitted reversing over his 15-month-old son on his driveway without realising and driving off - sparking a police hit-and-run probe.

Jamie Ellison had loaded his two daughters into the family car before backing into son 'AJ' and leaving him seriously injured at the side of the road.

He continued on the school run oblivious to the fact that police had launched an appeal for information after AJ was mysteriously found with multiple injuries.

Mr Ellison arrived home to find emergency vehicles outside and assumed his son was the victim of a random hit-and-run.

Gloucestershire Constabulary made a public appeal for information and speculated that a vehicle had been involved in causing AJ's injuries.

But when police later obtained CCTV footage of the incident it became clear that Mr Ellison was responsible.

After investigating the case, Gloucestershire Constabulary confirmed that they are not taking any further action in connection with the case.

Writing on Facebook, he said: 'Yes it was me. I just didn't see him or feel a bump.

'So imagine how I feel right now to be told that I accidentally ran over my own son. Think about that.

'That guilt will be with me forever.'

Mr Ellison explained how AJ had been at the window waving goodbye before he strapped his two daughters into the car at their home in Hester's Way, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, on Friday morning.

He then began reversing out of the drive, not spotting that AJ had left the house and was on his blind side.

'I drop [my daughters] at school at which time my girlfriend has alerted me that AJ has been hit by a vehicle. Naturally I get to the scene with police ambulances etc,' he said.

'Of course, I'm assuming it's a hit and run as I had no idea I reversed into my son on the blind side.

'My two daughters were also unaware he was there.'

Mr Ellison went on to explain the devastating affect the accident has had on the family, and the fact he had to explain the incident to his other children.

He wrote: 'A few hours later thanks to some amazing police men and women, they found CCTV footage which shows that I hit my own son.

'Could you imagine what I felt like then knowing I nearly killed my own son completely unaware that I was responsible?

'You really think I hit him on purpose to do a school run only to get in an ambulance with him 10 mins later? Think about that.

'Then I have to collect my other son and two daughters from school and inform them about their brother.

'I hope it's a chat you never have to go through. I can genuinely understand some opinions on here, but that's all they are, opinions.

'Now you have facts of a horrible family tragedy.'

AJ was taken to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital after the incident but is now recovering at home.

'The little man is recovering well and young enough to forget this day,' said Jamie. 'It's something that will never be etched from my mind.

'So please understand this is an accident. I don't want bad things said about me or my family. We're decent hard working parents and trying to do our best.

'It's a horrible tragedy and no one is more sorry than I am as I look at cuts and bruises on my son, constantly thinking what if, what if.

Earlier, Mr Ellison had appealed for information following his son's accident before he realised that he was responsible.

He wrote: 'I beg anyone who was on Hester's Way Road between 8:30 and 8:40....doing school runs or catching a bus etc to please call the police and help find who did this to my little man x thank you x.'

I think I would let the car run over me if I was dad.

Why was there a baby by himself on the driveway?

I think I would, too.

My question, though is: WHY was a 15 month old child left unattended in a driveway. The father was LEAVING. Where was the childs supervising parent.

I can definitely say that if there are moving vehicles and acces to public streets as well, there WILL be supervision.

Re: After Son Injured Hit and Run, CCTV Shows Father Did It

I want to see the CCTV video. Not because I want to see a 1-year-old being run over, but I would love to see the lead-up to this, how it all happened.
I was a right little bastard as a 2-year-old, escaping the house through a window, pushing a fucking tricycle through it as well, and riding down the footpath of a particularly busy street. I could have easily been killed.

Re: After Son Injured Hit and Run, CCTV Shows Father Did It

The kid being in the window as he's strapping his daughters in only to end up by the vehicle in what I'm guessing would be no more than a minute or two later is where I feel suspicious. Kids do escape, but unless the window or front door were wide open, hard to imagine a 15 month old getting outside that quickly.
