2-year-old Accidentally Shot, Killed Pregnant Ohio Mom with Family Gun

Police in Norwalk, a city west of Cleveland, say a 2-year-old boy shot and killed his pregnant mother.

This happened last week, and investigators are now piecing together how the toddler got his hands on the family's gun and fired it.

The Norwalk Police got a 911 call from a frantic father shortly after the incident occurred.

"She called me in hysterics, I couldn't get any information from her, other than something about my son and calling 911," said Laura Ilg's husband to police, telling the officers his 2-year-old son shot his wife.

It all played out at their home last Friday.

"This is very rare," said Norwalk Police Chief David Smith.

The chief said the young boy accidentally got ahold of the gun and Ilg was hit in the back.

She was 33 weeks pregnant.

The expecting mom was rushed to the hospital, but police say her baby died after an emergency procedure.

"An emergency C-section was done at the hospital at the time she arrived, and the unborn child passed away," Smith said.

Ilg was also pronounced dead.

Police say the 2-year-old is with his father and the investigation is still ongoing.

"Everything in the investigation indicates that this was a tragic mistake," said Smith. "The gun was left out but shouldn't have been accessible to the child, but apparently she didn't know he was in the room at the time."

As the investigation continues, officers hope no other families ever have to deal with something like this.

"I couldn't envision it happening the first time."

Chief Smith said the house was full of safety features with an extensive amount of protections in place like baby gates, but on the day of the shooting, the baby gates that were usually closed were left open.

Imagine the day you'll have to explain to your kid that he killed his mother and baby brother/sister when he was two years old. I wonder if his father will resent him for that.

I think this is one of those things you DON'T explain to your child directly. This is something a neighborhood bully explains to your child...which probably means that YOU should explain this to your child so he can come to terms with it before someone else does.

Matter of fact, the earlier he learns it and gets therapy for it, the better off he'll be.

As far as the mom is concerned, if there is anyone who deserves to get shot, it's the person that leaves a loaded gun in full reach of a two year old with the safety unlocked.

Baby gates are not gun safes. That father could be prosecuted on top of everything else he is going through.

I think firearms and ammo should be locked away with or without kids in the house. It prevents accidents like this. It also avoids legal liability for kids or any visitor who might get their hands on your guns.

With modern gun safes, people can be armed as fast as it takes to retrieve a gun from a random stash point.

I remember back in school so long ago when the sheriff would always tell us how bad guns were for us and how we’d be locked up for shooting someone else. This one kid asked “what if a baby shot someone else and killed them?” it was a funny question, and the sheriff said “that was a dumb question we’re not gonna discuss things that won’t ever happen.”. So like I wonder what he’d think now when he sees this
