Without dwelling on the ethical side of things, damn, that's a lot of money for someone in Sudan to spend on anything. Could've probably had her kidnapped to order, the family killed, and the cops paid off, for less than that. For perspective, not as a suggestion.

If he's not completely fucked up, she's set for life in any material sense, so while not palatable, this may well prove to be a good thing for her in terms of her long term quality of life, and is bound to really boost her family along.

Of course, that's a big if.

Considering it's a country which apparently permits a girl to marry at 10, and a third marry before 18, and the average is around 30, it's not outrageous by their standards that she is 16, so I'd say the fact that she was effectively sold to him is more of a concern here.
