Belgium, May 2024. A 16-year-old student was brutally attacked at the Geraardsbergen train station in Belgium after refusing to pay "protection money" to a local youth gang.

On Thursday, May 9, 2024, the gang caught the student alone after school. They beat him severely, resulting in a shattered nose and a swollen eye socket.

Doctors were monitoring the boy for potential brain damage due to the severity of the kicks he received while on the ground. A bystander, an older male witness, who tried to help was also assaulted.

Police quickly detained two minors in connection with the beating. The same gang was linked to a separate fight in Zottegem on the same day as the attack.

Local officials and social workers reported that some gang members were traveling from the Peterbos area of Brussels to target regional stations.
