Surprised I am seeing something like that in China. My family was friends with a professor at the Beijing College of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and when I visited in China in 2000, he was treated like a god.

He visited my Mom at her house in Wisconsin just as things were thawing, after meeting her when she was visiting my brother in Iowa and she invited him to come to Wisconsin and see her, when he did visit, he asked to borrow my Mom's bicycle to go for a ride. He told her later he wanted to see if EVERYTHING looked like it did at her house, so he actually rode about 10 miles away, and then gave up and decided what he was seeing was NOT propaganda, just the real U.S. He had been skeptical when in Iowa, but he only went where he was taken, so assumed he was being shown only the good things (I would hardly think of Southeast Wisconsin as being a "Propaganda Place" but I guess it was. The farms are largely owned by Germans (which is what I descended from) and they are generally large and prosperous.

The next time, when I saw him, was in Arizona, when he and his wife came over to visit her again after my Mom moved to Tucson. While there, he talked about surviving the "Great Leap Forward", which he was lucky to survive, as many college professors were devalued, and sent to prison camps. He was an engineer teaching aircraft engineering, so he did not suffer too badly, (no politics in aircraft engineering) but he talked about how when he went to visit someone, he brought along his own rice and food, because it was considered bad form to visit someone and expect them to feed you, since people were literally starving all over China in the 60's and early 70's. Both he and his wife were EXCELLENT cooks, and while there, he and his wife set up a production line in my Mom's kitchen, and turned out several hundred pork pot stickers, which we bagged up and filled her freezers with. I ate them for a year after that, and was very sad when I got down to the final bag. Those things were SO FUCKING GOOD, I could have eaten them every day! And he got to go through the Learjet factory, and see the missile silo south of Tucson, and we drove past the aircraft boneyard at Davis Monthan Air Force Base, and I also took him to the Pima Air Museum, which is the 3rd largest in the world now, behind only the Smithsonian collection and the Air Force Museum at Wright Patterson AFB, in Dayton.

I think the "one Child" policy is showing it's problems, as even when I visited China in 2000, my guide said the adults were complaining about the little kids becoming "Emporors and Empresses" from being doted on by all their relatives.
