Re: DR's Official MMA Thread

i was having a chat with my brother, he;s taking up BJJ at a local gym, he was telling me they do both BJJ with the gi or without.

i remember reading that when the gracies were developing BJJ one of them went down the route wearing a gi and the other without. is the one without a gi more of a vale tudo, bare knuckle/no holds barred type? or what are the difference between the two separate styles?

Jorge Masvidal Street Fight Video against Kimbo Slice’s protege. This video was taken about 5 years ago. Masvidal just fought for the Strikeforce LW championship last week.
i preferred the first fight they had

With Gi training you have something to grip which helps with maintaining positional control using sleeves and collars, better grip and leverage and also collar chokes are a factor. Tends to be a more technical development of your game and it also represents a more real style of fighting because like I said before you can grab the guys clothes and and choke him with it.

No Gi, represents the modern mma style of fighting, which means its more difficult, with a faster pace, more reliance on strength to maintain position, and with that more sweeps but maybe less sub-attempts due to the differing factors like lack of grip due to sweat and also you have less leverage.

So basically gi represents a more real like fighting scenario and non gi is more sport but is more difficult imo.

Seems like Jorge has his number. There was never a third fight.

Comes to show you that with hard work and dedication you can go from back yard brawls to fighting for a championship title.

as soon as i get myself a new job (hopefully soon) i'm considering signing up to go do some BJJ as well. though before I can do that I need to strengthen my leg up, gonna start cycling some distance first.
