Woman Shoots Knife-Wielding Home Intruder Nine Times
A 53-year-old Gwinnett County woman shot and killed a knife-wielding intruder inside her home in May 2011, firing a .22-caliber pistol nine times and hitting the man with every round, according to police. The attack happened about 6:30 a.m. on May 11 in the 2800 block of East Mount Tabor Circle, in an unincorporated area near Duluth, Georgia, Gwinnett County police said. Investigators said the woman was stepping out of the shower when she was confronted by a stranger holding a kitchen knife. The woman fell into the bathtub and tried to fend off her attacker with the shower rod before he forced her into a bedroom, according to police. There she reached a .22-caliber handgun she kept in a nightstand and opened fire. Wounded, the man made his way out a back door and collapsed in the yard, police said. The woman ran to a neighbor's home, where the neighbor placed a 911 call and handed her the phone. Sobbing, she told the dispatcher what had happened and gave her address. The intruder was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville, where he died of his wounds. Police identified him as Israel Perez Puentes, 33, of Alpharetta, a Cuban national. The woman was treated for minor injuries. Cpl. Edwin Ritter of the Gwinnett County Police Department said the shooting appeared to be a justified use of deadly force and that no charges were expected against the woman. "She did what she had to do," Ritter said. Detectives added that they were looking into whether Puentes had watched the home before the break-in and whether he might be connected to other assaults in the Atlanta area. The recording below is the 911 call placed from the neighbor's home after the shooting.
