A Florida mother called 911 in April 2011 after her 12-year-old son swallowed a handful of her prescription pills and could not be woken, according to the Tampa Bay Times and the Hernando County Sheriff's Office.

The boy had found a bottle of pills in a pile of clothes at the family's home in Ridge Manor, an unincorporated community in eastern Hernando County, investigators said. He took three Xanax, two Somas and one pill he could not identify, then climbed onto a bare mattress and fell asleep. When his mother, Lori Puentes, could not rouse him, she called for help.

On the recording of the call, Puentes strains to describe her son's condition and to give the dispatcher her address before deputies and paramedics are sent. The boy was taken to a hospital and survived. He later told authorities he knew what he had taken, the Tampa Bay Times reported.

Deputies who responded described the home as squalid. The mattress where the boy had been sleeping was smeared with dog feces, according to investigators, who also reported that Puentes had recently refilled her prescriptions but was missing 158 pills.

Puentes was charged with child neglect. She had already been arrested on a violation of probation, according to the sheriff's office. The 12-year-old was placed with a relative.
