Woman Hid in Bathroom as Two Men Kicked In Her Door
Greenville police arrested two men after a woman locked herself in her bathroom and stayed on the phone with a 911 dispatcher while intruders kicked in her door, according to the Greenville Police Department. Maceo Lamont Gardner, 33, and Mark Donte Gardner, 28, both of Greenville, were each charged with one count of first-degree burglary, according to police. Maceo Gardner was held on a $150,000 secured bond and Mark Gardner on a $50,000 secured bond. The break-in happened late on the night of June 21, 2012, at a home on East Baywood Lane in the city's Westhaven neighborhood, police said. The resident, Regina Lynn Hathaway, called 911 as two men forced their way inside and retreated to a bathroom, where she remained on the line with a dispatcher. The recording, which runs about 19 minutes, captured the sound of the men kicking in a door and moving through the home, according to The Daily Reflector, which obtained the tape from police. "I'm terrified," Hathaway told the dispatcher. "I'm so terrified." She reported that one of the men was trying to push open the bathroom door as officers reached the house. Officers surrounded the home and went inside, where both men fought with police before they were taken into custody, according to the department. A police dog helped subdue one of the suspects. Hathaway was found unharmed. Police credited the dispatcher, who relayed the suspects' movements inside the house in real time, with helping officers reach Hathaway and make the arrests quickly, the newspaper reported. The department released the recording on June 25, 2012, several days after the break-in.
