A Westminster, Colorado, woman kept a home intruder talking for several minutes, offering him money, jewelry and the family television, while she hid with her teenage son and stayed on the line with a 911 dispatcher until police arrived, according to news accounts of the May 2011 break-in.

Teresa Middleton said she first noticed a man watching her from across the street as she stood in her open garage. She said she went back inside, locked the door and pulled her 17-year-old son into a bedroom before dialing 911. On the recording she can be heard quietly telling the boy to stay down and out of sight.

The intruder, identified by police as 23-year-old Benjamin Saffell, forced his way inside and tried to break through the bedroom door. Rather than stay silent, Middleton began bargaining with him. "Tell me what you want. I'll give you whatever you want," she said on the call, according to ABC News, offering cash and jewelry as she tried to buy time.

Dispatcher Barb Tuholski, a 22-year veteran, stayed with Middleton throughout the roughly eight-minute call. Tuholski later said Middleton was frightened but gave clear information. "She was able to give me enough information that I could visualize what she was doing," the dispatcher told CBS Colorado.

The first officer reached the house within about two and a half minutes of the call, police said. Officers took Saffell into custody as he resisted, and investigators said he appeared to be under the influence of drugs. No one in the home was hurt.

Saffell was charged with seven counts, including first-degree burglary and assaulting a peace officer, according to CBS Colorado. At a hearing in Adams County court in Brighton, a judge reduced his bond and ordered him to have no contact with Middleton. He was scheduled to return to court later in June.
